Prior to school my favorite things to do were art projects I loved arts and crafts as a child. If it involved painting, coloring and cutting paper I was all about it! I began kindergarten at the age of 6. I was always older than most of my peers due to my birthday being one day after the age 5 enrollment deadline. Although I began school later, I always stayed on track and learned well during the elementary years.

By the time high school came around I was really disinterested in school. I tried a different school within my school district my sophomore year, but I really had no drive to participate. I also obtained my first job as a supermarket cashier at age 15. If anything the lure of a paycheck made me more uninterested in school and I ended up withdrawing to work full-time shortly after my 16th birthday.

Just a few months after leaving high school a friend told me how one of our classmates had also left school to get GED and had already obtained a college certificate that enabled him to work in the IT field. This sounded intriguing to me and I looked into a program to obtain my GED at a local technical college. Due to being under age 18 I had to attend weekly test preparation classes at the school. I passed my test the first try and obtained by GED in 2002 1 year before I would have graduated high school in 2003.

In 2010, a seasonal farm job I had worked every fall for 3 years prior brought me to North Dakota. That year I made a decision that I would stay there for the winter and see how I liked it.. since well..rent was super cheap and high paying jobs were plentiful. I am not really sure what lead me to the decision, but one night I saw an ad for a local college on tv and I decided to give them a call the next day. Within a week I was enrolled to start my AS in Medical Assisting. I also obtained a technical support job about a week later. I attended school and worked there for 2 years. Before a case of homesickness and sickness of shoveling snow prompted me to move back to my home state of Georgia :) .

I really didn't know what I was getting into here, but I felt having some kind of 4 year degree would help improve my career opportunities. Well, this only lasted one semester. I found that the world of business was not for me. Luckily, at that same time the school began a Bachelor of Science in Health & Wellness program which sounded much more interesting to me. I quickly changed my major...again...

Since my bachelor's program was new at the college I attended, I graduated with a small group of peers that I worked with very closely in every class up until graduation. This influence is what ultimately lead me to want to teach in the healthcare field.

Well, I knew if I wanted to teach in allied health then I would likely need a Master's Degree. But, with a busy preschooler and a full-time job how could I do that? I did some research on online for degrees for working adults which ultimately lead me to CityU. Also, Seattle has always been one of my favorite places (which we just moved to) so I decided to enroll in the Adult Education program.
