Stage/Timeline card- Intimacy Vs. Role Confusion (20-40 yrs. Old) In My Own Words- After learning who I am and can make relationships and friendships based on alike interests, I hope to find a lifelong partnership or be faced with isolation and inability to have meaningful relationships. How Was the Crisis Resolved/ Experience- I was able to meet someone in my late teens that I fell in love with and married a few years after. I was able to form a relationship with someone that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with based on common interests and goals. The textbook states, “Adolescents who resolve the identity crisis satisfactorily develop the virtue of fidelity: sustained loyalty, faith, or a sense of belonging to a loved one or to friends and companions.”

Stage/Timeline Card- Identity Vs. Role Confusion (13-19 yrs. Old) In My Own Words- After learning what I am capable of, I need to find out what my interests are and where I can fit with a group of individuals or take a step in the right direction to figure out who I am. How Was the Crisis Resolved/ Experience- I learned that I enjoy playing teams sports and loved to run and be active and form friendships and a passion for playing soccer. I found a sense of self while playing the sport with teammates I formed a bond with. The textbook states,” At any point in the life span, development could shift in a positive direction, and a crisis might be successfully resolved and a new strength developed.” If I did not feel the crisis of me needing to find my sense of self and interests, I may have never played soccer or developed friendships with teammates.

Stage/Timeline Card- Industry Vs. Inferiority (3-12 yrs. Old) In My Own Words- It is the crisis of figuring out if I can perform tasks up to cultural standards and age appropriately. If I do not fall into the same standard or perform at the same rate as my peers, I will feel inadequate. How Was the Crisis Resolved/ Experience- I am putting my desire to the test by testing my abilities such as having A.R. tests in elementary school. I was able to see if my skills were up to par with the rest of my classmates. I realized if I did not get the score that I wanted, I still had time to improve my reading skills. The textbook states, “Erikson, while acknowledging that crises could be resolved poorly, left room for improvement.” After realizing that if I have one bad test score, that doesn't mean I am a bad reader.

Stage/Timeline Card- Initiative Vs. Guilt (4-5 yrs. Old) In My Own Words- I have built confidence through performing tasks independently and can do so through my own willingness to. I may not perform the task perfectly or to peers’ standards and may feel guilty or embarrassed. How Was the Crisis Resolved/ Experience- After realizing I can do things; I have built the desire to learn new things. While learning how to ride a bike I didn’t feel shame when I didn’t get it right the first time but was able to eventually perform the task after practice and guidance from my mother. The textbook states, “Erikson did make clear that social and cultural influences mattered.” Perhaps if my mother was frightened of me trying new things such as riding a bike, I too, would be frightened of stepping outside of my comfort zone.

Stage/Timeline Card-Autonomy Vs. Shame and Doubt (2-4 yrs. Old) In My Own Words- I learned that I could perform tasks independently, and throughout my attempts I learned to grow through my shame and doubt while learning new tasks. How Was the Crisis Resolved/ Experience- I can figure out that I can do things for myself such as feeding myself, however I may feel shame or doubt if I make a mess or stain my clothes. Over time and practice I can feed myself sufficiently and with few messes. Through knowing that my caregiver is there to guide to develop skills needed to have in life. Our textbook states,” In toddlerhood, the critical theme is autonomy, or a sense of agency and independence. A child who first successfully developed a sense of trust would be in a particularly good position to develop this strength. After all, if you feel that others have your back, you are likely to try new things and thus develop new skills.” My mother helped me learn and develop the necessary skills that I would need for day-to-day life.

.Stage/Timeline Card -Trust Vs. Mistrust (0-2 infant) In My Own Words- Based on my relationship with my caregiver, I can develop trust or mistrust in the world around me. How Was the Crisis Resolved/Experience- If I felt discomfort as an infant, I would cry out for my mother, and she would tend to my need. If a stranger had picked me up it is possible I would cry due to the unfamiliarity. I developed trust in my caregiver, and thus the world and environment around me; but also knew to be leery of strangers. Our textbook states, “For example, the critical theme of infancy is basic trust versus basic mistrust. People need to trust the world and the people in it, but they also need to learn some mistrust to protect themselves from danger.” Which indicates that both trust and mistrust need to be developed.
