It's your time to predict, based on readings and ideas in our world, what the next decade in the history of education in the US will be.
1) Read Sears, L. A. (2008). A short history of United States’ education 1900 to 2006. History of Literacy. 2) Write what you think the next decade will look like, following Sears' timeline. Be creative and do not hesitate to use your instincts, hopes, fears and imagination!

Times have changed so much from 1900 to present day 2023. From only having 7% U.S children attending kindergarten, to 20% of them attending in 1920, and now having 100% of them fully enrolled, it has become a great progress over the century. In addition, the amount of school days has also increased, from only having 99 days of school in 1900, to 158 days of school in 1950, and now to 180 days of school. Wars and pandemics have greatly impacted schooling because after WWII, more children started going to schools, and after the Covid Pandemic, zoom classes were introduced. Being that this society is becoming more advanced and technological, I believe that in ten years, there will be no more in person classes and that schooling will all be virtual.

Education has changed so much in just twenty years, between 1900 and 1920 with a great amount of children attending school, more days being added to the school year and an increased interest in education. This goes without saying that I believe that education will continue to change with the turn of the decade. But I don't know if it will be for the best or otherwise. Seeing many classes become virtual, whether via zoom or any other virtual platform, makes me believe that soon our whole school system will be virtual. Though this may have its advantages, it could loose its "human touch". There may be a lack of human interaction, group learning, and communication.

The next decade of education will be very different from what it currently is. In only 20 years it has changed drastically, and now with the pandemic and the use of more technology, it will change even more. I think that the pandemic has made teachers realize what they approve/disapprove of in the education system. As a result of this, I think that standardized testing will either no longer exist or it will be modified. I also think that we will have more virtual classes, but mainly for middle schools and high schools. It is more convenient for them to learn while being at home. However, I think elementary schools won't have virtual classes. They need human interaction to develop their social skills, and they don't have a big enough attention span to do work by themselves and on the computer.

Education is so different now from what is was years ago. So many changes have been presented and some were solved and some are still not. I believe that in the next decade majority of education will be electronic based. It's already got very big on electronics, but I know in the next couple of years it will be all either online or some type of online program. I don't agree with it being online because I believe that students should be able to work with other students in person and sometimes need a break from technology. Especially our young students, them being on the computer all the time is not a good thing. Hopefully our education system will only change for the better and for our students to be taught all they can to be successful.

There have been drastic changes in education within the United States over the past couple of decades. For instance, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people attending schools, mainly due to laws in place and the heightened importance of a degree when applying for jobs. Aspects of education will continue to change as time passes. I believe that things will change for the worse mainly because of how teachers are treated today. Many teachers are underpaid, treated terribly, and often put in danger due to school violence (an example is Abigail Zwerner, a teacher in Virginia who was shot by her 6-year-old student). As a result, (according to cnbc.com) an estimated 300,000 teachers have left their jobs between February 2020 and May 2022. I believe many will continue to leave the profession which will result in shortened school weeks for public schools and overall shorter amounts of school days that children must attend each year. Additionally, schools might have to turn to remote learning on zoom (in which meetings can include more than 50 children at a time) in order to accommodate the decreased amount of teachers available for in-person learning.

The differences in education from 20 years ago are astounding. Given how frequently we already use technology now, I believe the future will be technology-based. Although we didn't have technology when I was in elementary school, it is continually getting better. One thing I think is a huge concern is that because of technology, student have become less social. Schools in the future will have flying desks and chairs at this time. Observing changes might be thrilling, but they aren't necessarily good. It is comparable to allowing robots to rule the globe.

Since the 1900s, I think that the school system today has allowed for more creativity, and teachers are more able to adapt to various learning styles. Technology has allowed students to be more engaged. It has also allowed learning to continue even though there may be external forces preventing students from going to the physical school building, like a snow storm or a pandemic. I think that technology will get better, creativity will continue to grow, and teachers will continue to adapt to their students. However, one of my fears is that the educational divide will increase as well. I feel that in the next decade, more students will not have access to technology due to economic situations and other reasons. Another fear is that in the next decade, the quality of education for some students may be lower due to uncontrollable reasons such as a lack of teachers, books, technology, support programs, outdated books, or the location of their school compared to other students with different circumstances. I hope that in the next decade more teachers will be understanding of their students and realize that what happens outside of school could affect their students in school.

The school system is constantly changing and evolving. It started with barely anyone going to school and now kids all across America go to school everyday. Changes pertaining to increasing the school year and the amount of students that are in school are just some of the changes that have been made in years past. In the future, I believe the education system will change in a few ways. First, I think there will definitely be an emphasis on technology. I think this can be very beneficial to the students in a sense that maybe technology will be used to talk to other students around the world. This will give students a chance to connect to others and branch out some more. Additionally, I think classes will become more individually structured. Yes, students will still have general classes such as history, math, science, etc but I believe there will be the option for students to take that fix their individual needs. Maybe a student enjoys computer coding he/she would be able to take a class during the school day on it.

From the 1900’s all the way to 2023 the education percentage increased tremendously from 7% to 100%. As well as the number of school days increasing from 99 to 180 full days of school. As a student today I’ve noticed a lack of human interaction between others due to the pandemic. I think that some classes will be taught online for people worldwide to learn. So the education rate will be increasing due to how easy it will be to further one’s education.

Since the 1900s many significant aspects of the school systems have changed and will continue to change. As more technology is being invented and the world is evolving so will the school systems. With the recent pandemic, schools learned how to use technology for the benefit of the school system. Now knowing how to have virtual classes and assignments I think it will better the school system in the future. Every student has a different learning style, and having the option to have virtual classes can help many students learn in a setting they feel comfortable. As technology continues to advance the school system will as well. I also think in the next decade individuality will be more welcomed in schools. Now in 2023 schools are welcoming individuality in schools but there are still plenty of ways to make students feel comfortable being themselves. I think this is a big topic that will grow tremendously in the next decade.

Over the past century, the world has seen a rapid and incredible development of the education system. The reading looks from decade to decade, and all of the changes and new developments that occurred in each, and I feel that the next decade will be much different than what we know now. Even over the years, enrollment has increased and become required, and we see more people graduating and completing different school levels, which is amazing. Technology has become a major aspect of education over the past decade, and I feel in the next decade and especially after the pandemic, it will play an even bigger role. I feel that more classes will become online or over zoom, and I'm not sure if I feel that this is a good thing. I think social interaction and in-person learning are crucial for a lot of people and their social and cognitive development, and I hope not too much of this is lost. We also see many teachers that are unhappy with the state of the education system, and standardized testing. I feel that this may be another thing that will possibly be removed or used less in the future. I'm hoping that the future of education still consists of valuable in-person teaching and personal interactions. A lot is being lost through the overuse of technology, and I feel that there is a way that technology can be used in a valuable and efficient way without taking away from the amazing teachers and everything they have to teach their students. I also hope to see an increase in salary for teachers over the next decade, because I feel that for all of the work they do and how much they help to educate their students, they deserve better.

We can easily communicate with one another online ( zoom or google meets), read books online, type essays, etc. I also believe that it might switch to online learning due to change covid has brought the entire world.
There have been many changes in The education system since the 1900s. I think the next decade of schools will be quite different. I believe that technology will play a larger role than it does currently in classrooms. I feel that teachers will lean more to using PowerPoints and having students use interactive websites to contribute to in-class activities. I hope that classrooms will still maintain good contact with students instead of assigning work to be completed solely on technology devices. I think students still need to use in-person and hand-written methods for learning in the classroom. I think it would be good to expand the technology usage, but only to a certain degree. Additionally, I believe that since the recent Pandemic the school system has changed the mode of learning. Especially, because of remote learning. The school system as a whole has learned that it is possible to learn remotely. However, learning remotely has its negative sides as well. I would hope that school remains primarily in-person for learning to take place. Schools are important resources for students to learn and prosper from various aspects.

According to Sears (2008), "only eight percent of students actually graduated from high school". In present day 2023, the graduation rate is around 85.3%. There has been a major increase in graduation rates from 1990, to present-day 2023. A difference in our education that wasn't available in 1990, is the online courses. After covid, many courses switched to online and haven't returned to back in person. Also, with our rise in technology, students are able to access any assignments online. I think the next decade of education will be primarily virtual classes and online assignments. I think the online aspect of schooling has been more convenient for everyone involved.

Education has evolved ever since the education system ever began. From the 1800s to the 1900s and to this day! It will only keep evolving. Before it was the classic textbook, pen and paper, chalkboard, etc. Now we have developed new techniques to teach the current generation through the use of technology. Now we have computers and virtual ways of communication that we didn't have in the past. Like everything else there are pros and cons with todays technology. The pros being with technology we can still teach those that aren't present in person. But a huge con and a fear of mine is that the engagement will diminish as technology gets even more advanced. I have no doubt that in the next decade education will change even more drastically. Robots are getting closer and closer to being fully developed which is a huge factor to consider for humanities future.

From decade to decade, education and the schooling system has continued to change in all types of ways. More importantly, over the past 20+ years, from the 1900’s to today, these changes began with the implementing of laws so more children attend school, changing of school days and hours of education. Concurrently, the education system now allows teachers to have more creativity, more adaptive skills for teaching different styles and also technology, which has changed the schooling system drastically. Technology allows the students to be more on top of, and engaged in education, it allows for a virtual option of education and a spot or platform for students to have all their work, and access to the class. Consequently, I argue that in the future school will almost be all online, and electronic based. I think this has benefits of both sides, but I don’t like how it will make education and schooling loose the personal touch and connection, which I believe is a big part of teaching, learning and forming ones identity; with relationships, etc. Lastly, my hope is that this switch to all online schooling will not happen, but I have a strong feeling that every couple of years schooling systems will start to shift to more and more online options.

Since education has started, it has only developed more and more. Just over the past 10 years there have been many changes to education. Over time many laws, acts, systems, techniques, ect. have been introduced to only help improve the direction that education can take. For the future of education, I can see it becoming more technology based than it already is. If one thing the pandemic has taught us, it is that we can continue our education from any location. Ever since, we have incorporated technology into many parts of the education field and brought new ways to present lessons. I feel it can be beneficial to use technology to a point because most people grew up in the school system with standardized learning techniques knowing they work well. If schooling went fully online it would be upsetting to see a “normal” school setting disappear and could create many issues for young children such as not being able to socialize or to learn properly.

Since the education system was started, things have been evolving in many aspects. From the first known schooling being basic numeric education, to now being taught history and language, things are getting more and more involved in a school setting. In the last 100 years, there have been fights to make schools more inclusive, and debates on whether or not we should be taught more or less of history. I feel like in the future, we'll begin to learn ALL of history, including the things that may not make us look so good, like the genocides humans have caused/experienced, and the real details of things in our history that are typically avoided. Also, where I grew up, there were classes that taught agriculture, finance, and every day things we're expected to knw as adults but aren't really taught in school. I feel like as time goes on, more schools in different areas will begin to integrate those types of "adulting" classes to better help students function in the real world.

Things constantly change within the education system. Education in this day in age very much differs from education many years ago. Education not only involves the learning of students but the learning of students by the use of technology. Classes aren't only in person in a classroom anymore. Classes are online and through technology that hasn't been used before and the pandemic has a huge part in this aspect because the pandemic is what started this line schooling which has now continued to be used years after the start o the pandemic. The next decade will definitely be technology based within the education field. I feel like the next decade will have students focus more on life skills and necessities rather than common literacy and learning skills. Because this generation is so smart in technology to the point where simple or complicated assignments can be done with a click in a computer, the future seems to be that much simpler within the education system. Children of all ages in the future decade and decades will definitely be more mature at a younger aged compared to our generation due to the technology usage.

Since the pandemic we've introduced innovative teaching methods and integrated technology into many facets of the education sector. Since most individuals were raised in a system of standardized education, I believe that using technology can be advantageous to some extent.

The education system of the United States has changed so much throughout the past, and will continue to change in the future. We have progressed so far as a society, from children barely finishing compulsory schooling to people aspiring for multiple degrees in higher education. We fought for inclusivity in the school system, and are still fighting for it to this day. Another change is how we view the value of our education. Sears writes "By 1940, students
were sent on to the next grade “until they entered trade or commercial courses and
dropped out of school to work” (Clifford, 1978, p. 174)", which explains that many Americans only went to school because it was required, and only cared about the completion of their education before they could work. We have changed from this line of thinking to wanting to complete our education so that we can go study beyond what is required of us. I think one of the biggest transformations is the use of technology in the classroom. 20 years ago, children were ecstatic to be in a class that had a smart board. Now, children are so used to seeing them in classrooms that they aren't even phased by it. I think there will be more technological advancements in schools, and we will see more and more younger grades learning via Chromebooks or iPads. Teachers will also be taught lessons on how to properly use this growing technology to ensure that their students get a proper education. I think schools will toy with the idea of fully online classes, however I believe that students should be in school fully. They will not create meaningful relationships and function properly through their screen, as they need that human element.

It is extremely evident that since it began, the United States education system has been consistently evolving. The education and school systems have evolved over time technologically, financially, and socially. By the time the 1900’s rolled around, kindergarten was already 30 years old however, only 7% of the United States population was enrolled. Also, only 8% of enrolled students actually graduated high school. I believe since there were already so many huge changes in the education systems in the United States since even just in the past 50 years, it is only inevitable for it to keep changing for the better as the decades go on. I think with the technology advancing at such a high rate these days, it will advance our school system and the curriculums by providing more exposure to this generation’s culture in the media. I think that all schools will become more diverse and inclusive when it comes to race, class, sexual orientation, gender, etc. With social media these days, everyone tends to be exposed to the issues that occur in this generation which will one day become important history. As there are many negatives that come from such easy access to the internet, I believe it is very educational and beneficial as well.

Going forward I hope standardized testing such as the SAT and ACT go away. Some students have good grades in school but score poorly on these tests or are unable to afford test prep which puts them at a disadvantage. I believe technology will continue to grow and educators will have to incorporate that into the way kids learn and do their assignments. My fear is that one day the technology will be so great that everything will be done for the students and the need to pay attention and actually learn won't be necessary. I also hope college becomes more affordable for future students, but that is more like a dream!

There are various changes that I have already seen that have been implemented into the public school system, here in NYC. I observe these changes mainly through my nephew, who is now in kindergarten. One big change that I have seen so far is the use of technology that is now required both in the classroom and at home. I remember being in kindergarten and getting homework assignments that were printed on paper. In comparison, my nephew is now receiving and doing homework on an iPad at the age of five. When I was five years old, I had no exposure to this sort of technology, rather the standard tv. The ways in which student are now being taught are also changing, therefore making the school system in the US ever changing.

Education is the foundation of our society. Without it, some of our accomplishments and developments would not be possible. As we all know, schooling was not always an option for everyone. However, as time goes on, more and more laws are put into place to protect students and to ensure that they receive the education that they deserve. New challenges appear everyday; the most recent being Covid-19. If Covid had shown us anything, it showed us the power of technology. In the next decade, I feel as though more virtual classes, more work from home, and less teachers will become the new standard. I fear that this absence of human interaction from teachers and other peers will stunt the education process and the development of students. At times, technology can be very useful and is a valued tool, however, relying on it entirely will force us to become a dependent society and students will grow up lacking social skills, discipline, focus, and preparedness for the real world. This lack of presentness also prevents students from exploring themselves and meeting different, unique people. School is a place of learning, but above that, a place to form relationships.

Because technology has such a great impact on our lives, this could have either or both a positive or negative impact on our lives. Especially in the way in which we socialize with others, and everyone might become too dependent on technology.

Throughout history, the education system of the United States has been transformed and modified a number of times. With each decade since 1900, schools have received more attention and support, though this did not occur without significant prior challenges. Lack of funds, censorship of textbooks, and segregation of both race and intellectual abilities were among the many factors that contributed to the current state of the education system today (Sears, 2008). Considering the next decade, I believe that schools will continue to utilize technology in more advanced ways. For example, online learning is growing in popularity as well as the use of electronic tools in class such as laptops and iPads. Another change that could occur in the next decade is the abandonment of test culture. Instead of focusing on student test scores, educators can allow them “to take initiative…[by] demonstrating the relevance of course material” in more of a hands-on way (Sears, 2008). This can help to ensure that student’s educational needs are met in order for them to succeed. Lastly, the allocation of funds and resources to impoverished cities should also be addressed within the next decade to provide equal opportunities to all students. Overall, it is hoped in the future, that administrators continue to improve the education system’s shortfalls in order to allow all students to meet their full potential. --- Some challenges that I have not initially touched on include the need to address cultural assimilation and to increase social connection among students. I believe that schools can provide workshops or courses relating to cultural assimilation and other topics that involve celebrating diversity. I also believe that schools can find or create more beneficial ways for students to improve their social connections by completing hands-on group work more often and encouraging after-school clubs.

There will be a continuation of the increased stress on standardization and teaching to test, which can put certain groups of people at a disadvantage as well as not encouraging learning, but memorizing instead. Based on the timeline, major shifts occured when world events happened like the Cold War creating the need for more advanced science being taught. Hopefully nothing major like a war will occur in the next decade, but it has the ability to shake up the American school system in a huge way.

I feel like more and more schools and school systems are going to incorporate more ways to use technology or different devices. I have already seen and experienced my past schools switching from doing things completely on paper to using chrome books or iPads. This was even prior to covid. Also during covid and now in the present, we have remote classes and are able to hold classes like ours from all different locations. I feel like technology has had a huge impact on our society and will continue to do so.

Within the deep dive of the United States education systems history, it is apparent that the schooling system is always evolving. With the understanding that education is so entirely important, and the constant change is greatly beneficial to clearer interpret what exactly students need in todays society, it is safe to conclude that not one student is the same. Among the increase in enrollment of students and the expanding curriculum, more accepting education opportunities set in place, addition of technology to advance learning capabilities, and the growing passion to learn, be smarter, and gain insightful skills the education system will only improve. In the past, education was not as easily accessible, nor even allowed to some now the rates of enrollment and graduation have skyrocketed. The adaption of laws put into effect to benefit and ensure students the proper education to soar is so important. With technology constantly advancing, it has generated drastic changes to the traditional schooling ways sometimes for the better and for worse. Todays generation orbits around social media/ the internet, and with that being said could be educations greatest downfall. During the Covid-19 lockdown, we all became witness of how advanced technology really is and how much of a role it plays on each individual. The switch to online learning was beneficial at the time as it was very needed, but I hope within the next decade the transition to a more in-person school setting, one on one contact, and a decreased used of technology could deem a better learning environment. For me personally, as a younger student and even present day I see how negatively the accessibility of the internet and online can be for a student as well as an advantage. I hope to see less of which, and more retained knowledge as a new standard for schooling. The necessity for teacher interaction in a school environment, growth of self-identification, introduction to new people and forming relationships, as well as self confidence and dependence is dire in future schooling requirements.

The Internet has also provided an opportunity to learn for those who are unable to physically attend school or even afford to travel to school. There are many opportunities now with technology that will change history.

I believe that in the next decade, there will be a massive change in the schooling system. With technological advances exponentially accelerating, the school system will follow. We saw this during Covid, when entire schooling systems had to depend on technology to get continue providing education for students. With the coming of A.I technology and automation, knowledge will become more and more readily available, and students will have less need to memorize and learn things as information would be available for them at their fingertips. A.I technology is very new, and it is still very unpredictable as to what impact it would have on the community as a whole, but it can either be a massive help or a disaster to the future of schooling.

Education has been an ever-changing field that without a doubt has had vast effects on the world. The saying "molding the minds of tomorrow" comes to mind when thinking about the future of the education system because as we move forward so does our thinking, with new teachers and ways of applying, communicating and understanding the different needs of students that traditional cookie-cutter curriculums and methods have often neglected. Technology, will play an integral part in the next decade by allowing us to connect, experience, and challenge different ideologies and ways of thinking to further our own knowledge and become a more well rounded student regardless of age. Technology will also help students visualize the gravity of certain topics so that it will be ingrained. For example, when studying history students can now see an animation of a certain event rather than just reading words off another textbook page.

The next decade will be more far advance with technology and many people’s lives will change by having the choice to be completely online for everything. I believe that everyone learns differently as well so having this option to those who don’t feel comfortable in a school or work setting can be beneficial to them. This can also be a more convenient choice for those who have a busy schedule and prefer to submit work or join class online.
Emily Ledesma: Schools have constantly been changing since the early 1900s. Advancements and great strides have been made to change demographics and prior statuses in school systems. Schools in the 1900s were more segregated and unfair to students of color. Alternatively, progress has been made to prevent segregation and diffuse racist tactics in the school systems. School systems have advanced in creating equal opportunities for students of all backgrounds to thrive and grow. Additionally, schools now are engaging in more modern methods, such as technological advances. From, the video in class we saw that 47% of teachers use technology for homework assignments for students, and 94% of students utilize technology for homework. Technology is a great tool to improve students learning. However, I do believe that technology should be used in moderation in order to encourage in-person and hands on learning. I believe that the school systems will keep improving and adding more methods to engage students to create a fun, equal and safe learning environment!

A challenge that could come with technology is that some areas who don't have the funds for technology would fall even further behind compared to more privileged areas. With standardizations, we tend to put everyone on the same playing field and see where each person is at, but unequal access to technology would show a bigger gap between the two groups. Technology is way more expensive than books and resources especially because you have to buy the digital versions anyway. This puts some communities at a disadvantage.

Education has changed greatly since the 1900's. In the 1900's, not everyone was allowed to go to school because of race, gender, etc. In today's world, anyone is allowed to go to school and get an education. Teaching methods have also been drastically improved with the help of technology. Teachers and students are able to connect even when not together. Within the next decade it can be predicted that education will become more heavily reliant on technology, as it continues to do every day. Hopefully, schools will become a more open-minded places.

The educational system has changed dramatically from the 1900's. Not all people were able to go to school due to their race, gender, etc. Also, in the past, schools were not very educational. In today's world, schools are much more respected in society, and everyone is able to get an education despite their race, gender identity, etc. Technology is also much more advanced in today's education system. Teachers and students can connect with each other online despite being many miles apart. Within the next decade, it can be predicted that schools will become more reliant on technology. Hopefully, schools can become a more open-minded place and a safe space for all.

The school systems in the 1900s compared to todays school systems have changed drastically in this day and age. We see that in the pst people didn't hav the same rights as we do today. With our technology becoming so advanced, it will most likely play a huge roll to the future of the school systems, as well as the way that kids will learn in school. technology is only growing, hopefully for the better to advance our knowledge in schools.

Within the 1900s, Schooling wasn't made for the student's success, but for the mass population for them to join the workforce. As schooling evolves, the purpose has grown to help students achieve their desired jobs and lives. I think the next evolution of schooling and the education system will prioritize creativity and preserving the inner child within ourselves. This will promote the idea of following your passion and being able to pursue any career desired.

The next chapter in the education system will probably have more truth when it comes to histories. I say this because years prior, as well as currently, a lot of the things that were taught in regards to history especially was sugarcoated. There has definitely been improvement as years passed which is something I believe will continue for the next chapter as well. Another thing I believe will certainly be prevalent in the use of technology. Everyday the world becomes more technologically advance and involved. Schools are already using technology for majority of things and I only seeing it continuing.

Education has advanced significantly since 1900. Many people found it difficult to pursue an education. For the working class, public schools were also too expensive. Education improves every day. The usage of technology in education will increase in the future. With our iPads, computers, and a variety of educational programs, we are already technologically sophisticated.
