It was an excellent port due to its location on the English Channel and its relative closeness to the Atlantic Ocean. The Germans occupying the town were not allowed to surrender and had to hold out through the American bombing and shelling and the British naval fire. Through the American ands british attacks, the town was almost destroyed.
