The book is about community and our relationship with the environment and nature. A group of friends are looking for a place to settle, the dessert is too hot and the valley was too wet. Finally they find the forest which was perfect.

Through time they try to control the environment too much and build shelters from the wind, this results in the forest becoming thinner and thinner, until there is only one tree remaining. It is then down to the children to find a solution and rebuild the environment.

Tasks for Year one and Year two.
Within the science curriculum it is hopeful that children can identify and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants. Therefore a task with relation to this book would be asking the children to name the trees and ask them what trees are in the book "The Last Tree". And with focus on the theme that is the Nature and linking with science ask the children what is needed for a tree to grow.

1. Look at houses in the past and learn about what they were made of. Go on a walk around the local area and learn about the differences in houses (LOTC). Discuss why are houses not made of wood anymore? Potentially link to historical events such as the Great Fire of London if the children are aware of it.

this activity would include showing the children pictures of different types of leaves and then focus on the different leaves in the book. Then the task would be to go outside (Learning outside the classroom) and collect different leaves. Then focus on the colouration, shapes and patterns. Then ask the children to design a leaf off their own and can make a class tree similar to the "The Last Tree". This links with the Art curriculum as the kids will be using drawing and painting to design ideas

Reading activity could include reading poems about the different seasons in the year. After this children could write their own poems about a season of their choice. Children could be encouraged to design poems to reflect the seasons eg. in the shape of a leaf, in a sun for summer, in capitals to suggest thunder etc.
