Reading- The students will be exposed to a variety of texts during read aloud. They will be read a book at the beginning of the lesson, and they will be involved by being asked questions and given time to think about things differently as the teacher reads. The books that the teacher chooses can assist the readers in the topic they are learning or a certain writing trait they are focusing on, so they can see an example of it in an actual book.

Listening- Students are able to generate some ideas from their peers. Keeping an open mind allows their brains to gain more knowledge. When students hear themselves or a teacher read their writing aloud, they are able to hear some errors in the paper. Mistakes are easier to catch as you proofread and get other opinions. Finding errors helps the students make their writing more fluent.

Writing- The more opportunities the children are given to read and write, the better writers they become. The writing workshop is a prime opportunity for children to work through the steps of their own individual writing by being given independent writing time, conferencing with the teacher, and hearing the work of their other peers. Every piece of this process makes the students stronger writers.

Viewing- The writing workshop allows students to brainstorm off of their peers. By seeing other students writing they can get ideas as to how they want to construct their paper. The students will also be viewing the teachers writing as they explain the process. The students will gain knowledge about how others being and organize their writing by viewing it.

Visual representation- As children write their pieces of work, the layout is an important key factor. It is important to have a title for the essay overall, and indented paragraphs throughout the paper. Formatting helps keep the students' paper stay organized and look well developed.

Speaking-

Supporting a Range of Students:

We use the writing workshop structure because not every student in the classroom works at the same pace and has the same learning needs. Allowing all students to participate in the writing workshop at their own pace helps them build their individual writing stamina. This is inclusive to all students, including...
ELLs- will build the student's writing confidence and encourage interaction between ELL and non-ELL students. They will also be encouraged to use pictures and visuals to assist their writing development by providing them different ways to express their feelings other than words.
Gifted Students- will be given the opportunity to be challenged in writing through peer and teacher conferencing, and will be given new ways to think about their own writing through hearing others. Ways to challenge gifted students to improve their writing include giving them ideas of writing prompts to make them think about things critically, and giving them a variety of genres to write about so they have a wide range of exposure to writing in general.
Special Needs- will be included in the social interaction of sharing writing with peers and teachers and exchanging ideas, regardless of various abilities. Writing workshop gives special needs students an opportunity to be involved and express themselves in various ways. They will be encouraged to work that their own pace and share their own feelings through their writing and illustrating.
Struggling Students- will be given direct teacher support during individual writing time. The conferences will be a time for one on one interaction where the teacher will give the students support and direction to improve their own writing stamina. Student conferences would also allow time for students to hear their peer's writing and ideas, and think about how they can improve their own writing. The mini lesson will also focus on an aspect of writing that the whole class needs help with, so the struggling students will benefit without being directly singled out.

Read Aloud- A read aloud is where the teacher reads a text to their students in the classroom. This can take from 10-30 minutes at most. Reading a book out loud to the students will help engage them into the reading. At the end, you can ask a few quick review questions that they might see in their activities at their stations for that day.
Mini Lesson- A mini lesson is a short 10-15 minute lesson in which the teacher will focus on a skill or trait's quality that the whole class will practice. The teacher decides on the topic of the lesson after viewing students' writing and seeing what the class should review.
Writing Time- Students should be given about 20-30 minute of independent writing time a day. This time should allow students to move around the room to a comfortable place to let their energy flow. The students can brainstorm ideas at first or begin to put all their ideas down on the page. The teacher should walk around during this time to answer questions and asses where students are at that point. The teacher should also write as well to show students that we are writers too.

Sharing-Sharing during writing workshop is about 10-20 minutes long. Students will read share their writing to the rest of the class, group members, or a partner. Through sharing time, the students who are listening to the reader are able to give feedback and respond to how they feel or react to the paper.
