Realism was an artistic movement that emerged in the 19th century from the years 1880-1914. Realist authors emphasized ordinary people and events and focused on depicting life as it really was. Also, regional writers used methods of local color writing to reflect the customs, speech, and character of people in different regions of the country. Furthermore, Realist authors relied on the merging sciences of biology, psychology, and sociology, as well as their own personal experiences.

One popular realist author of this time was Mark Twain. His novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, illustrates the journey of a boy and runaway slave traveling down the Mississippi River. The novel has a subliminal message that confronts slavery and racism. Another realist author of this time worth mentioning is William Dean Howells. His novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham, depicts the "rise" of Silas Lapham from having nothing to becoming a successful businessman. This novel was important because readers of this tough time can be inspired by the story. Lastly, Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage captures the atrocities of the Civil War, describing a young private of the Union Army that flees from the field of battle. It is important because it portrays the Civil War as it was from a realistic rather than a romantic point of view.

Naturalism is a point of view that bases its ideas off of nature, things that can be seen and is viewed as earthly. Naturalism and Realism are similar because the foundation of these ideas constructed from real life. For an example, an atheistic point of view is a form of naturalism. The main focus of naturalistic writers is to capture the vices or bad things of life and human misery. These writers were very blunt and wrote about humans in a similar manner to how one would write about a creature.

Realism vs Romanticism

Realism and Romanticism share similarities as well as differences. One similarity was that they both idealized nature although Realism did it more in a blunt way. These two ideas are more different than they are alike. One difference is that Realism focuses on factual everyday matters whereas Romanticism has a more positive outlook on things. Another notable difference is that Romanticism focuses on plot, hyperbole, metaphor, and feeling; on the other hand, Realism focuses on characters and concrete details.
