More than 3 million people work for the U.S. government. Donald Trump wants to shrink the federal workforce. He says the U.S. government wastes money. And he believes these cuts will help.

Most government workers earn between $50,000 and $110,000 each year. The United States pays those workers almost $300 billion each year. However, the U.S. government spends more money than it makes. So, the country must borrow money. That creates a debt. The national debt is now $35 trillion. That’s a record.

President Trump is not working alone to reduce the U.S. workforce. Businessman Elon Musk leads a group called DOGE. Part of its plan was to offer a buyout. More than 60,000 workers agreed to resign. They will be paid through September. However, thousands of others were fired with no warning.

Brian Gibbs was a park ranger in Iowa. He was fired on February 14. “I am absolutely heartbroken,” wrote Gibbs. “I am not okay,” he added.

Some U.S. lawmakers also expressed concern. Senator Lisa Murkowski warned that many job cuts “will do more harm than good.” And she said they are causing “confusion and anxiety.”

Experts are not sure if Trump’s actions are legal. Judges are reviewing them. But the president said his actions are not wrong. As he explained online: “He who saves his country does not violate any law.”
