wonder how your class can make this padlet informative using news articles, books, and information from current
digital technology platforms to provide a sound explanation for the public why this design is not safe at all.</description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The implemented backpack-like shield is not safe because the partner rider does not have a proper place to hold on to. The item has 2 handles at the back which is meant for holding but this is not enough to protect the partner rider from falling backwards. If we place this in a car situation the handle is like the seatbelt. If a car suddenly breaks after moving with high velocity, the seatbelt is enough to make sure the passenger won’t fall over the glass (lessens the force impact). As for the motorcycle, the handle could be easily let go off or the backpack-like shield could not be stable and fall with the passenger. If the motorcycle suddenly stops, a person with a large mass could not depend on the shield for safety. He/she will fall off and just harm themselves.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>While the backpack-like shield promotes or finds a way for commuters to adjust to the new normal, it is not entirely safe. One of its problems is that the barrier can affect the motorcycle’s aerodynamics, which is A LOT MORE complex compared to that of a car. There is already a high risk of motorcycles being prone to accidents, and this is because the motorcycle that moves through the air interrupts this, because of its irregular shape as compared to a car. Turbulence occurs, and this is what holds riders back in motorcycles and friction is created to push against the object in motion. This causes an aerodynamic drag, which is affected (as this is the force parallel to the direction of the flow). The stability of the motorcycle ends up at a risk, and the shield itself contributes to the odd shape that breaks up the smooth path of air.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>According to Mel Aquino, a riding coach of Mel Aquino’s Yamaha Offroad Training Camp, the rider must always wrap around the waist of the driver. This is because both the rider and the driver should act as one the entire ride. The driver should always be in control of the motorcycle because any sudden movements would influence the stability and control over the motorcycle. For instance, if the back rider does not lean with the driver in motion-cooperation, this would affect the driver’s control. Thus, given the Angkas backpack-like shield that has small handles at its bottom, it is not safe enough for both the rider and driver of the motorcycle.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers Inc. (PSME) in a position paper mentioned that the enforcement of the Angkas backpack-like shield is unsafe due to the reason that “When the motorcycle is in motion, the barrier will contribute to the change of the designed allowable aerodynamic forces (drag and lift) which will compromise the stability of the motorcycle. This will place the safety of the riders at risk”. Moreover, the group added that the attached barrier increases the air resistance of the motorcycle when in motion while its front side builds up pressure while creating turbulence &amp; suction behind the barrier. In addition, Mel Aquino (riding coach of Mel Aquino’s Yamaha Offroad Training Camp) stated that “The hard plastic divider could act as a sail catching air and creating resistance. Any sudden gust of wind could cause the rider to lose his control of the bike”. Hence, the Angkas backpack-like shield affects the motion and stability of the motorcycle making it risky for both the rider and driver of the vehicle.

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Though a backpack-like shield may seem like a good and creative way to help us in the battle against COVID 19, several issues may come across when this is implemented. One may be the safety of the passenger. Yes, this creative inventions makes us safer as we go out in public during the pandemic, but that wouldn’t help lessen the amount of accidents being brought upon a motorcycle — if so, it only makes rides more dangerous. Motorcycles are dangerous as it is, considering the open aired often uncontrollable acceleration but having this barrier in the middle of the passenger and driver will make it more dangerous for the passenger in a sense where the passenger isn’t as secure as if there was no barrier. Not being fully secure will help rise the amount of accidents related to motorcycle drivers and passengers. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After several research, I can conclude that a backpack-like shield as proposed by the motorcycle service provider, Angkas, is not considered the safest option because although it does help us adjust to the “new normal,” it may actually end up compromising the safety and heath of both the driver and the passenger more. According to the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers Inc., such invention is considered unsafe considering the vehicle itself and the motion it produces causing greater risk to the rider and passenger’s safety and health. They also stated that because of the barrier, it can cause pressure to build up leading them to accidents and there is no full guarantee that the barrier is effective in protecting the spread of the air particles from the rider and passenger.</div>]]></description>

(PSME). They mentioned in their first argument, “When the motorcycle is in motion, the barrier will contribute to the change of the designed allowable aerodynamic forces (drag and lift) which will compromise the stability of the motorcycle. This will place the safety of the riders at risk.” With that single argument, we can confirm that this can disrupt the rider’s normal pace and will endanger both the driver and the passenger. Additionally, unforeseen weather conditions specifically, windy weather, can cause unbalance and control of the motorcycle. With that being said, it is highly discouraged to use these backpack-like shields for motorcycles.</div>]]></description>

It was supposed to be a backpack-like shield that would lessen the possibilities of motorcyclist getting COVID-19. However, there were several cases of motorcycle accidents that happened due to the backpack-like shield. It is said that it may affect the aerodynamics of the motorcycle causing the motorcyclist to loose its balance and crash.          <description><![CDATA[With the unexpected turn of events, people have transitioned to a “new normal” where we are reducing the transmission, contact, infection, and vulnerability by socially distancing, wearing masks and maintaining healthy diets, etc. are recommended and mandatory for the safety of the people. The transition is not easy as many are uninformed or misinformed, about the events and how to be safe going outside and socializing in general. 

Currently, social media and several organizations have tried to inform the people about the current situation and safety measures they must do in order to keep themselves and other people safe. By the use of social media and listening to medical professionals, we can use this wide range platform to inform and bring awareness to the problems in the country, and diminish inaccurate information such as the benefits of the backpack shield.

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Removal/dismissal of these backpack-like shield. </li><li>If in all cases that it is still required for motorcycle services to have this backpack-like shield, we should demand for a better/safer design of this shield. The next design should limit the aerodynamic drag the driver and passenger receives during a trip from one destination to another. This application of reducing the aerodynamic drag would lessen both wind dragging and wind lifting the driver would receive thus lessening possible road accidents. Ways to improve the design is through looking at the evolution of cars. Modern cars are improved in designs throughout the decades not only by making it prettier but in terms of reducing the aerodynamic drag it receives. Modern vehicles designs that reduces the aerodynamic drag is through the smoothness and overall shape of the vehicle (reducing having rough edges). From this, the next backpack-like shield must have smooth edges, shorter in height, and must not be wider than the driver.</li></ol><div><br></div>]]></description>

First of all, the aerodynamics of the motorcycle can be affected due to the barrier being placed on it. This makes it more difficult for the rider and driver to weave through traffic like they normally do. This causes the motorcycles to be even more prone to accidents than they already are. What happens here is that turbulence occurs, and this is what holds riders back in motorcycles and this also creates friction to push against the object that is in motion. All of this is what causes something called aerodynamic drag, which is then affected as this is the force parallel to the direction of the flow. All of this will negatively affect the stability of the motorcycle and will end up at a risk. Lastly, the shield also contributes to the odd shape that will break up the supposedly smooth air path.</div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Due to current, unforeseen events affecting people's lifestyles, we have adapted to a "new normal" where physical contact is not encouraged unless deemed necessary. In this case, both riders are needed to have physical contact in order to be in motion safely. With this, it is encouraged to say that the "backpack-like" shield barrier could be removed from the motorcycle completely since the necessary protective gear is applied. However in any case that the shield is required by the government in any span of the future, shield barriers' factors should be heavily improved on and tested (such as windy conditions and maneuverability of the vehicle) for the safety of the riders when in motion. </div>]]></description>

The reason why they need to hold on to the drivers body is because this allows them to lean and move at the same time with the driver. This is done to weave through traffic. Angkas has proposed a backpack protection that would be used to protect the driver and passenger from contracting the virus. This design may seem innovative and good to some, but there are also downsides towards this approach. One of these reasons are because it will give the passenger lesser space to hang on to the bike. Us Filipinos are known to be sociable, which makes it difficult for people to stay at home. Although, one of the more important reasons why people have to leave their homes is to work. In addition to this, most Filipinos also commute instead of taking private vehicles. One of the known service providers is Angkas, which uses a motorcycle. They proposed a backpack like shield to prevent the transmission of the virus.<br><br>However, having seen that it gives more dangers instead of benefits, it is important to come up with a better plan. First and foremost, the backpack-like shields must be obliterated, and instead helmets that will be FULLY closed. The rider and the passenger must use masks that have layers for full safety. The rider will not be able to lean the same way as the driver, which will help the bike maneuver quicker in tight spaces.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The simple full-covered helmet can be already enough to be a requirement for a rider as well as a fixed sanitizer from the driver to regularly spray in every ride. Another rule that would be best to implement would be bringing your own helmet. As we know, passengers use the provided helmet by the drivers, but as we are in a pandemic, that would be more dangerous than not wearing it. If it cannot be avoided, the driver should prepare at least two extra helmets so that every time one has been used, it can be sanitized and left to dry so that it can be used again later on.</div>]]></description>

When the motorcycle is in motion, the barrier will trap wind/air into it, thus creating pressure. With this, there is a high chance that the rider will be carried by the wind and the motorcycle being hard to control and lose its balance resulting to an accident.<br><br>Inertia<br>- According to Newton's First Law of motion, "An object at rest will remain at rest unless an unbalanced force will act upon it"<br>- (inertia) The tendency of an object to maintain the same state of motion.<br>- Example : Car with people inside. As the car accelerates, the people tend to lean backwards, and as the car comes to a stop, the people tend to lean forward<br>- To connect : since there is a barrier (backpack like shield) attached to the rider, instead of staying balanced with the motorcycled, the rider instead, will most likely fall and push the passenger (if there is) with him/her because as the motorcycle moves forward, the rider and passenger will move backward because of the pressure created by the shield.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Instead of using barriers like make-shift shields for protection against infections, This idea can minimize accidents and infections without forcing people to make big investments to continue their income.<br><br>Use a different type of vehicle as a "taxi service". Using motorcycles has a big disadvantage being the fact that you NEED to be close to each other in order to safely, and comfortably ride it from point A to B. A car is easy to use for this situation because you can have the front seats closed off so that only the back seats can be use creating enough distance away from the rider and the driver minimizing the contact. That being said, not everybody can afford a car to use as an ankas. Therefore the next best solution is a tricycle car with a transparent plastic barrier in-between the driver and rider. This should minimize the risk and more importantly contact between the two people. Having the payment be done with a compartment in the tricycle car. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The country, along with other countries all over the world is in a battle with sustaining the economy and by all means we should find new, creative and effective ways to adapt to the new normal. The Angkas face shield is a stepping stone for new innovation, and with a better system we can have a safer and less worrisome environment for both both drivers and passenger. <br><br>A suggestion would be to implement a better payment system that would eliminate the close interaction after the ride. Next would be to come up with a design for the shield that will fix the aerodynamic problem. Lastly would be to have a good practice of proper hygiene and to follow the safety protocols, the use of hand alcohol and face mask, before and after the ride could make a big difference. These might be significant changes but it is what we have to do protect ourselves and the people around us.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Aerodynamics plays a vital role as a concept that turns down the project of implementing the back-riding plastic shields. To be specific, air resistance is a force that acts against an object that is moving through air. Suppose the motorcycle was to move in a direction that goes against a decisive blow of wind. In that case, drivers could quickly lose control and balance over their motorcycles due to differences in friction and air pressure. This decreased control over the vehicle worsens due to the plastic barrier, which adds more surface area that the air comes in contact with. As a result of this interaction, an aerodynamic concept called drag, which is an unavoidable effect of moving through gas, occurs. The drag and air resistance may also vary depending on the plastic barrier's final shape and size. </div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Angkas "Back Shield" proposal was supposed to be a way for people to gain income while also avoiding direct contact with their clients while riding to prevent the transmission of the Covid-19 Virus. The issue with this solution is that it compromises the safety of those riding the vehicle. The shield, while offering some sort of indirect contact to prevent transmission, can cause the vehicle to crash due to a change in aerodynamics and the overall clunky-ness of having somebody tugging at your back while you drive.</div>]]></description>
