They were advised to call 911 and in the meantime Dinesh attempted CPR on the infant which was of no effect. It was already too late when Gaurov was taken to the hospital. Doctors found that Gaurov had "irreversible brain damage". Another factor was when Dinesh mentioned in the hospital that something similar had happened to his older son, Sourab, before as well but he was able to save him with mouth-to-mouth. First of all, the depression he must've had to endure for accepting the murder of his own son. Secondly, even after the plea bargain, Dinesh still had to spend around 3 months in jail. This meant away from his family, loss of income, and loss of trust in the justice system.  He was so afraid of the system that the couple decided never to have kids again. Even after the sentence was over, people would point fingers at him saying he's the one who murdered his own kid.
