Equipment: Soil Sampler, Soil pH tests, glass beaker, thermometer, soil thermometer, measuring tape, trundle wheel, soil samples.

Applied Geographical Skills: engage with geographical questions (who, what, where, when, how and why), gather data, organise and interpret data, analyse geographical information to find patterns and connections, present geographical information.

Method of Gathering Data: Survey 123 questionnaire

• Observation of local soil particles (soil in glass beaker with water)

• Observation of local soil particles texture and colour

• Compare local soil to texture and colour of other soil types

• Measure Soil pH

• Observation of human interaction with soil on school grounds

• Observation of changes in uses of soil over time - historic maps

• Observe the aspect of school polytunnel (compass direction)

• Measure soil temperature (in and outside polytunnel)

• Field Sketch of site - to show human interaction with soil in school

• What characteristics did you observe in the local soil?

• Has the local bedrock affected the local soil? How?

Equipment: Field studies book, camera (phone), writing equipment, compass, crampoons.

Unit of Learning Title: Physical Geography - Rivers (Fluvial environment)

Equipment: Ranging poles, measuring tape, calipers, quadrant, trundle wheel, view finder, flow meter

Geographical Skills: Drawing sketch maps, analysing stones for erosion, identifying river landforms

Methods of Gathering Data: Measure the river - Depth & width

Using a trundle wheel to establish if there is a meander

Sketching the area using the view finder

Working out velocity of the river using the flow meter

Equipment: Counter, Stopwatch, measuring tape, RICEPOTS chart, Record sheet, Pencil

Geographical Skills: Observation, Map work

Methods of Gathering Data: Counting, measuring, map interpretation

1. Using google maps/ scoil net maps students should identify different land uses in the area

2. Students will pick a street/ road and count the different land uses on that road

3. Students identify road junctions near the school

4. Students cont how many different types of vehicles pass here over the course of 5 minutes- average result

5. This is carried out during different points in the day- morning, midday, end of school
