Everybody Hates Chris is an American sitcom based on the life of Chris Rock. The show is set in the 1980's with a primary focus on the working class family. Chris is a teenage boy living with his family in Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York.
"Chris is bullied at school (with little help from teachers or faculty members), tortured by his sister, shown up by his brother, victimized by the racist teaching staff, gets his money stolen by neighborhood thugs, underpaid at work, receives tough love from his mother and distressing treatment from his father. As the eldest child, he is often put in charge of his younger siblings but they usually disobey him. Next to all this, Chris is always the butt of the last jokes on each show. People just seem to hate him for inexplicable reasons. One of his talents is playing Asteroids and the other is calling basketball games. As he gets older, Chris becomes interested in stand-up comedy and begins telling jokes in school."

After his first day at work, Chris is given his first paycheck of $25. Unfortunately, the jacket is $50.

This episode is heavily impacted by Chris' peers. The episode centralizes on Chris trying to become one of the cool kids in hopes of impressing his crush, Keisha. "Look at me I'm skinny and short. I'm not gonna be cool overnight. You think a leather jacket could help?" Chris is consistently trying to fit in with the crowd throughout the series. Steinberg states "Crowds are based mainly on reputation and stereotype, rather than on actual friendship or social interaction"(pg. 130). This relates to the episode because Chris is trying to fit in by simply wearing a leather jacket to build a reputation. He has his one best friend, Greg, who often gives him practical, yet ineffective advice such as "ask for an allowance". They both belong in the same clique. According to Steinberg, "The clique provides the main social context in which adolescents interact with one another"(pg.128). They're best friends, appreciating each other more than others. Greg initially questions Chris' desire for a leather jacket during the beginning of the show. He is later seen wearing a leather jacket before Chris is able to get his. All of a sudden, girls around the school begin to recognize Greg and call him by his name. This puts an immediate smile on his face. Steinberg enforces his reaction by saying "when adolescents are reinforced for following a crowd's norms, they feel better about themselves and further incorporate their crowd membership into their identity" (pg.134)

This episode focuses on the interactions between Chris and his father, Julius. Julius is a man who truly knows the value of money and often gives Chris valuable advice. When Chris initially asks for an allowance, the show cuts to Julius hearing something completely different; "Since you work like a slave all day and don't have any time to enjoy your own money, can I have it?" This triggers Julius to respond with an "I allow you" speech. Julius is mostly an authoritative parent who does his best to create a good life for his children. Steinberg says "authoritative parents are warm but firm, They set standards for the child's conduct but form expectations consistent with the child's needs and capabilities. They value the development of autonomy and self-direction but assume the ultimate responsibility for their child's behavior" (pg.105) Julius fits in the category perfectly because he an understanding man, who has his children's best interest at heart. He provides his children with the necessary support for their growth, fighting stereotypes along the way. At the end of the episode, Julius walks into Chris' room and congratulates Chris his first check. Chris is disappointed because the check isn't enough to cover the jacket. Julius then gives Chris some advice about money. He provides Chris with comfort by giving him a solution to his problem. "You want the jacket, save your money. You can work with me again next week". His advice is amazing. Another notable quote from this episode is "There is no such thing as being early. You're either on time or you're late".

The entire episode is about finding a quick way to become cool. The reason why Chris wants a leather jacket in the first place is because everyone says it's cool. Everything around him tells him that the jacket will be the fastest way to coolness. The episode also references media by mentioning how Run DMC brought the leather jacket to prominence. The store Chris buys the jacket from has a mannequin wearing the exact same jacket in the front window. Steinberg mentions "Advertising aimed at teenagers takes advantage of the fact that they are more impulsive and self-conscious than adults" (pg.207) This ties in with the episode because Chris is both very impulsive and self-conscious. The leather jacket consumes him throughout the episode and he picks up a job just to buy the jacket. H

Chris Rock is an extremely determined character who can be extremely relatable to a lot of adolescents. In this episode, he learns the value of money and he understands how hard his father is working. Luck isn't always on his side, but he's happy to be alive anyways. He learns new lessons, allowing his character to grow all around.
