The text is about the people from many nations who left their marks on Britain and the British in geographical names, language and physical appearance, such as hair color and height. Immigration is something that goes way back in time. Beaker folk crossed over from mainland Europe (2000 BC) but got replaced by the Celts (1000 years later) who also came from Europe and settled down. In 1950s, 60s and 70s Britain was short of labor. In these decades, people from the Caribbean, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Hong Kong and Cyrus went to Britain to find work.

This text is useful to our theme because of the keywords “discrimination, race, culture, racism”

Short summary :

Mr and Mrs xenophobia is a poem about two racist seniors. The poem desrcibes their lack of connection to the outside world, they move to suburbia which is often inhabited by a majority of white people, they live inside with their coronation memorobilia, teacups and saucers. The poem then gives the story a twist by mentioning their amnesia which is monitored by “a dusky GP named Abdullah”.

Connection to the Theme:

At times you will find that some elders are inhearently racist. But often its based on misunderstanding and not hate. This could be because many of these seniors did not grow up around people of different races. And was probably raised without other cultures around them.
Getting to know other cultures from an early age is crucial as younger people often see the world with curious eyes and not judging ones.

Second generasians. The text is about this Pakistanis family who live in Britain and have to adapt with the multicultural Britain. They describe the dangers about living in Britain and how they are adapting. The father of the family is afraid of that his family will be too much off a multicultural person and maybe look away from their original culture. One of the sons describe his experience with life in Britain, he reads the Koran at home so he do not forget about his culture. He study hard in school and tries to be the better one. He also speaks about the other life in Britain; he sees a lot of opportunities with the inspiring music and people in Britain. In the end of the text the fear from becoming a brit with brow faces shows a lot. The 1-2 generation of immigrants are not that exposed, but the 3 generation are in a great danger of being just a brit with a brown face but still the most successful of all the generations.

The reasoning that some people emigrate from one country, and immigrate to another, is due to the “push/pull-factor”. If there is an ongoing war, or extreme poverty in one’s current country, one might consider immigrating to a new and better country. The biggest reason that refugees escape their country, and seek for another, is war and poverty. If their countries offer horrible living standards, it is considered a push-factor. Something about the country is pushing the person to find a new home.

In a country like Denmark, we have some of the best opportunities to build a new life, although it can take a while. Denmark is a peaceful country, in the sense that there is almost never war in Denmark. Therefore people from a war-struck country will feel a pull-factor towards countries like Denmark. In an instance, where a refugee has come to Denmark due to poverty, the pull-factor here would be the welfare system that is in the country.
