For what I researched, the that pressure that gas produces into the molten rock, which is lighter than the surrounding solid rock. Forces its way upward and may ultimately break though zones of weaknesses in the Earth's crust. If so, an eruption begins, and apparently, there are two possibilities. I think that looking at it in a scientific way, it could be possible (when humanity is a lot more developed) but very hard to get to build some sort of tool that prevents it or stops it. I mean, i think that there a more options (that haven't been that succesful) like evacuating or preventing people from living at the bottom of volcanoes. Its strict linearity provides a contrast with the shapes of the landscape and the sky.
