Professional “Take Away” from Reviewing Resources: My biggest takeaway from the resources on burnout and compassion fatigue is the importance of recognizing and addressing the emotional toll of caring for others. We go into this profession wanting to help others, but we have to make our own mental health a priority to avoid burn out.

Reflection on Importance of Self-Care in the Helping Profession

Reflection on Importance of Self-Care in the Helping Profession: Self-care is a crucial aspect of the helping profession because you can't pour from an empty cup. If you spend all of your time pouring into others and supporting others and helping them to be the best version of themselves then at the end of the day you don't have anything left for yourself. It isn't selfish to prioritize self care, actually I would argue that someone who does not prioritize self care is the selfish one.

Identification & Description of Personal Self-Care Strategies: One strategy I use to practice good self care is regular physical activity. The motivation that it takes to workout sometimes requires more than I have at the time, but I also know that feeling after a good workout where I feel like I could sleep for a decade is the healthiest my mind is. I take out my aggression and anger and frustration on weights or boxing or whatever sounds good that day and at the end of it I have not only burned off some calories and got my heart rate up in a healthy way, but I have also boosted my endorphins which helps with my overall mood.
