Victoria's Secret

This print advertisement is from Victoria Secret’s promo on their “BODY” lingerie line. The advertisement says “The Perfect ‘Body’” in reference to the name of the specific line, but is depicted across an image of 8 thin women. This phrase combined with the way these women look gives off the impression that the “perfect body” are the women depicted in the advertisement. These women are the beauty standard of tall, skinny, and fair skinned. They all have flat stomachs, thin arms and legs, large breasts, and bombshell curls. The women's facial expressions are sultry and seductive, selling the image of sex that Victoria’s Secret is notorious for. They’re all posed in angles that show off their assets with the camera facing them head on. The advertisement itself does reflect gender hegemonic ideologies in society as all the women in this ad are cis-gender women.

Aerie

This print advertisement is from Aerie’s “REAL Campaign” line of clothing. This advertisement does not have any words or phrases on it but depicts women wearing a combination of their lingerie. These women are very different from one another, there are 5 women of different skin tones and sizes. There is one woman with large curves and some cellulite on her thighs. There are two women with super naturally curly hair. Their expressions look genuine like the photo was taken in the middle of them laughing or telling a joke. Their bodys are positioned next to each other, they have their arms wrapped around one another but not in a way to show off their assets. The lingerie that they are wearing is mix-n-match, they’re not matching sets. This lingerie is also more full coverage and not ‘sexy’, rather just regular bras and underwear that the every-day woman wears under her clothing. I do think that this advertisement reflects hegemonic ideologies in society, but for a younger audience. I think that society has shifted what we want to see and our need for more representation of natural bodies in the media, but this goes for my generation of people. I think older generations of people are not used to seeing advertisements with full figured women and would prefer seeing thin bodies over bigger bodies. This portrays the shift in beauty standards and acceptance over time.

This is a print ad of Savage X Fenty’s lingerie line. In this ad, there are no phrases or words on it, rather an image of 5 different women wearing matching sparkly purple lingerie. These women are all wearing different styles of lingerie in the same color and black heels. The same color in various styles of lingerie from full coverage body suits, to skimpy and sheer bralettes. This advertisement is showing off the diversity that Savage X Fenty tries to embody and emulate in their brand. They also do this by including different women in their advertisements and shows which is evident in this print advertisement. These women are all different body shapes and have different hair textures. There are skinny women and curvy women depicted in this ad. Their expressions are posed, sultry, and sensual. They’re indeed modeling and posing for the camera in different positions. They're all sitting and standing around a sofa couch facing towards the camera. I do think that this advertisement reflects hegemonic ideologies in society, but for a younger audience.
In Conclusion....

With all three advertisements in mind, it is evident that lingerie companies ultimately sell to the masses and cater to the stereotypical ideologies of what it means to be feminine and sexy. Lingerie ads include different women and highlight their curves and bodies in such a way to appeal to the eye. It caters to the male gaze by creating the image of a sexy woman and at the same time caters to the female gaze by comparing different bodies to each other while not segregating them from one another.

Ultimately, advertisements have a goal of selling something. And those that create this advertisements must be aware of what people are interested in and still be true to their brand and company. Each company has something different they value wither that means valuing sex over body representation or vice versa. From here, we the consumer decide what brand we are able to resonate with and feel comfortable wearing and spending money on.
