Identity Status - Diffusion, Achievement

The book and the video cover the same important bits of information. James Marcia's Identity stages are Identity Diffusion, Identity Foreclosure, Identity Moratorium and Identity Achievement.

Identity diffusion: this is where you don't question your beliefs. You accept them and go about your day without direction and possibly the rest of your life. There's an absence of crisis and an absence of commitment.

Identity Achievement: This is where the individual has undergone a crisis and decided to commit to a path. They know what they want and are walking that path.

I chose a video from the DLC episode of Prompto from Final Fantasy 15. Prompto's character undergoes the most obvious change within the game. In his stand alone you see how far he's come. He was a fat adopted kid who spent all his time just going through the motion of his day taking pictures of animals so he doesn't have to talk to anyone. After he gets knocked of his a train by his friend by accident and finds out he's a manufactured clone from an enemy army he starts seriously questioning who he is. More than that he questions what he wants and why he wants it.

Identity foreclosure is the stage where a person is committed to a cause or reason but they've never undergone a crisis.

Identity moratorium is he stage where a person is in a crisis but not sure if they can or will commit.

I chose a clip from Gladiolus's episode DLC in Final Fantasy 15. Gladio's character is Shield of the King. A position every first born son takes up in his family going back hundreds of years. Its something he's known and trained for from birth. He doesn't resent it at all.

Halfway through the game he gets his butt kicked by an enemy commander named Ravus and he questions if he's strong enough or worthy enough to continue being the King's Shield. He goes to undertake a trial to figure it out.

I think for all of us there are different parts of our identity that are in different stages. I can be in a stage of Identity achievement in my career but in identity foreclosure in regards to my role as a daughter. I can be in a consistent state of identity diffusion as an American citizen (I'm not). I could be in a status of identity moratorium in my pursuit of qualities in an ideal partner. Its fluid and there's not a necessarily right or wrong answer for any of it.
