John was truly a gentleman. Our family was lucky enough to have worked with him for 3 years of History Field Day. Through his dedication and committment to HFD, our daughter, Madison, was lucky enough to go all the way to Maryland and DC to compete. In that trip, we all got to experience one of his Nighttime Monument Tours. What energy he had, even in the wee hours of the morning. I will never forget how he not only knew everyone by name, but could recall personal things, past conversations, and events with them. Rest in Peace. You have left an indeligible mark on many.
Love,
The Olinger Family

JOHN is FAMILY.. John was with us and beside us through it all, in school and in our families! John was with us with our own children's births, grandchildren's births, their Weddings, parents funerals & our many memories that we've shared together, so much time spent together, so many celebrations, so many years working together at Fruitvale Junior High! John was definitely one of a kind. His legacy will last forever. His presence at Fruitvale will be remembered by all. Even after his retirement he would still stop by the school, just to check in, visit students, teachers and to say hello! He is deeply missed and loved by all of us. Of all of your travels you've taken John, now, your at the greatest place of all. God Bless You John.

I remember the day that I first met you at a job interview for a FJH history teaching position. You ask if I was interested in teaching History Day and I said that I was. That started our journey together in teaching History Day to students at the junior high. Of course, Mr. Hefner, you were the expert History Day coach and I learned much from you and have wonderful memories of taking students on midnight tours of Washington, D.C.'s monuments and rushing to students' presentation at University of Maryland. Which at times involved a parking ticket or two. Maybe best to forget the tickets! I also have a vivid memory of you entering my classroom one rainy day, dressed in yellow slickers--hat and all. You looked like a fisherman ready for a big catch out in the North Atlantic. Of course, the students loved you. My daughter, in particular, who was a student at FJH, was especially thrilled when you let her ring the school bell. Then there were the ski trips to Mountain High. We would take several busloads of students to the mountains for the day. Some had never been before. Mr. Hefner you will always be in my memory and that can never be erased. Even though, you are gone, I will still have those precious memories with me for the rest of my life.
