Due to their public perception of being radicals were subject to persecution. They then took the opportunity to flee England by settling in the new world (America) where they would be free to practice their beliefs. They would eventually go on to establish the Massachusetts bay colony which would grow to include the future settlement of Salem. The Puritans believed in Predestination or the idea that you are fated to go to heaven or hell and you could not change your destination. They also believed in Total Depravity or that everyone is inherently sinful through the fall of Adam and Eve. They also believed that the devil was real and that he actively interacted with the world causing disease, natural disasters and bad fortune and that the devil employed witches and wizards to do his bidding. After a doctor examined the girls he concluded that there was nothing physically wrong with the girls and thus concluded that the symptoms were of a supernatural origin. The immediate reaction to this was that the girls were witches, however the girls quickly turned the blame onto several older poor women including a foreign slave by the name of Tituba who confessed to being a witch. Tituba had in fact been telling the girls stories that included magic and also demonstrated voodoo magic to them. During the trials, the girls would be seen acting in very strange ways and repeating what the accused witch was saying or doing in unison or performing grotesques poses which to the Puritans was more than enough evidence to convict someone of being a witch. Trials would also include a full body search for a witch's teat would would look like a third nipple. Old feuds between neighbors would also come into play as some decided to accuse their neighbors of witchcraft. At the time he was accused of being a communist and he refused to name anyone he knew as a communist this would heavily impact his life. He would then visit Salem and collect information which he culminated in his new play called "The Crucible" . His goal was to liken the Salem witch trials to the trials of the Red Scare.
