This book by Debbie Levy would be great for a lesson on the Civil Rights Movement or even during Black History Month. Being one of the most popular book of 2015, Levy takes the "song" that was sung by most African American's during the early 1950's and late 1960's and shows how the song's message of hope and determination stayed the same, even till now.

Henry's Freedom Box, by Ellen Levine, is based on a true story and tells the story of how Henry became a freed slave. This book would be a great way to open a lesson on both slavery or the Underground Railroad. The story may start off as a little sad, but that doesn't mean it has a horrible ending. This story has also won a Caldecott Honor Award.

Safely in the classroom and school building itself is very important, but this book would be great for the first day of school or even safety week.

Peanut Butter and Cupcake, written by Terry Border, is a great way to teach friendship in the classroom. Peanut Butter is the new kid in town, and no one wants to play with him until he finds a friend which happens to be Jelly! When using this book, you could talk about being a good friend, or even creating a writing prompt about friendship. This book was written in 2014, and would be a great first-week starter!

The main character of this book, a bird, travels back in time when stuck in a museum's dinosaur area. The illustrations in this book are incredible and gives the reader the chance to make their own interpretations on what will happen next.

The Pete the Cat Series by Kimberly and James Dean has been popular in the preschool and kindergarten communities for the last couple of year, and I can see why! The super cute illustrations and simplistic text make the book likable for all ages. In an upper-level classroom, I would use this book to encourage my students to look for the good every day. The story starts off talking about Benjamin Franklin and ends with Vladimir Zworykin's invention of the electronic tube, so if you were doing a classroom study on different types of inventors this book would be great for that too!

Sunny Side Up, by Jennifer and Matthew Holm will take you back to the summer of 1976! This graphic novel is about a girl named Sunshine Lewin. After a freak accident with her brother, Sunny goes to spend the summer with her grandfather and she has the time of her life! While this might not be a book that I would personally use in my class, this novel would be great for older children, or for even those wishing it was time for summer vacation!

Captain Underpants is popular for upper elementary boys. For this project, I wanted to read Captain Underpants to see what boys like about it. When reading, I noticed straight away that these books were funny. The humor throughout the story got me through reading this book in one night. I would highly suggest this book to any upper level elementary boy, who didn't know what the to read. During this age, boys start to read less, and i think this book series could help them continue down the path of reading.

She misses her old friends and her mom who left when she was a little girl. But everything starts to pick up for Opel after she find a dog at the Win-Dixie grocery store. When rereading this book, it brought back a lot of memories from elementary school.
