The business section will lean in and work with afterschool educators to make afterschool learning exciting, meaningful, and relevant. Young people will be excited to go to their afterschool programs knowing that they are learning something, creating new products, fixing community issues/problems, and being a leader. I hope that theere will be a significant increase in funding to support the epansion of the field as the world realizes that children in the US have a lot of catching up to do to compete with other countries, and that we need to rely on afterschool programs to teach those additional skills.

The greatest opportunity for the AfterSchool field in the next 10 years is that the foundation has been started to create awareness accross the country regarding how important the OST field has become for families, children and organizations to support children everywhere and that they now have a platform that has been provided through several organzations both nationally and locally to tell everyone why we need to have programs that can help children through learning and enrichment that can take place during OST . It can support what is happening during the day and create an extension or a safe place for children to come not only afterschool but before school as well.

Staffing programs with quality people. With unemployment rates very low, most jobs being part time and license requirements/qualification narrow the field to hire significantly.

Engaging the field. I believe that there are huge challenges around funding for afterschool (21C budget cuts), school safety, SEL .... I think we are in a in a time where we can reach more people than ever. I was very impressed seeing the young people from Florida speak after the shooting. If we can mobilize students, parents and stakeholders, we can have a huge number of people advocating for afterschool and initiating change.

In the next 10 years, the field will continue to deepen its work through the partnership and collaborations that created the conditions for more holistic connections to learning as well as social and emotional development. Due to the work of local and statewide networks as well as national partners, afterschool programs are positioned as a testing ground for what works in engaging children and youth, particularly around youth voice and agency. With true partnership, this information can be shared across sectors to better support children and families through a holistic lens.

Are there college programs/degrees that specialize in ASP, Extended Day or Youth Development beyond the traditional Education learning path? When selecting a major I considered biology and computer science because it was an option. Even though I didn’t choose that path it allowed me to consider it as a potential option.

Would a degree as a Youth Development Educator give enhanced credibility to the profession for those who choose this path and also those who don’t?
