    • Slaves were useful to plantation owners, didn't want to lose that. Owners already had control over their slaves, didn’t need to jump to killing them. Also, if a slave was killed, owners would have to find someone to replace them, which could take more time. (Ida B.   • 3rd Excuse: Since people of color seemingly assaulted women, acceptable to lynch them. Even if they had a good relationship w/ a white woman, this was considered forced & therefore assault.
