module 1.1 Challenges and Opportunities: In the second video, Prof.Dr. Hans Anand Pant of the Deutsche Schulakademie makes the point that the integration of refugees in our school actually provides a good opportunity to rethink schools in general and that the work required to integrate them can be a powerful driver for innovation at schools. Do you agree with this statement? Why (not)?

I totally agree, because reviewing and reconsidering school system, organizing meetings for exchange of views, creating an intercultural space for communication, is helpful in order to create a net where students, school staff members and external specialized staff could share their experience and improve themselves.
This type of organization, focus on students refugees need , that is important for their social and cultural integration.
I also think that in this way school can became really a cozy space for migrants and where they feel safe again, especially if they had a traumatic experience in the country they leave. No country or school have the right "recipe", but

transforming plus transferring practices from one context to another

could became the key to create a collaboration and improving network .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDfqFbJznYc

Is it dealing with trauma? Or is it about language support? Do you also have experiences where students have very basic needs such as those outlined by Amber? And how do you meet those?

I think that communication is the first main need of my students. They're in a new country, so learning Italian will allow them to become really part of the new society in order to satisfy other basic needs such as: build new relationships, move through the big amount of laws and regulations that are essential to have medical and legal assistance and share they're experience as migrants in a world that has forgotten the meaning of leaving home countries.
The second main problem I face is the lack of economical resources that are essential in daily surviving. For example most of the refugees need clothes (shoes, slips, socks...), dishes and food, that often is provided by charity.
There are organizations and associations, as the one I serve in as a volunteer, that act in order to address the entire range of needs. For example my associations has experienced and qualified staff that offer Italian free classes, free cultural mediation service and clothes and food distribution.
We also organize intercultural activities (such as creative recycle, knitting and sewing labs) that are open both to Italians and foreigners so they really know each other and build strong and true relationships.

I'd like to use also digital story telling but for now we do not have electronic devices.
Regular student can be prepared with experimental exercises that help them to feel empathy with new students, for example language translation exercises.
I'd like to try this exercise :
a) Regular students listen to a song in a foreign language, very different from native language.
b) Students divided into groups listen each one a verse of the song and trying to translate it.
c) Students put together partial translations
d) Teacher gives to students the correct translation.
The aim of this exercise is showing to regular students how could be hard for non native students face another language
( for this exercise I took inspiration from a workshop I attended this year organized by MCE http://www.mce-fimem.it/.
The MCE is a professional association of teachers who organize innovative learning courses for teachers and for pupils)
