Hailey- 1. According to Dr. Jay Giedd, in terms of learning and adapting to the environment, the brain reaches its apex at 11 years old. 2. Prefrontal cortex- The prefrontal cortex is our most human part of the brain. It explains the difference between us and chimpanzees. It is the latest to evolve and the last to mature. It is also the certain part of the brain in which allows us to time travel, and where we do the most of our thinking and considering about the past, also what is happening at this exact moment in time. It allows us to go into the future, and is a critical part of the network’s four things like long-range planning, for judgement, for controlling impulses, and for organizing and strategizing. Correlation with the limbic brain- The adolescent’s job is to integrate this “rational, time-travelling prefrontal cortex”, into the decision making centres of the older “limbic brain”. This can be difficult, simply due to the fact that the limbic brain is both emotional as well as impulsive. How they explain a teenager’s behaviour- While both systems are developing over time, the limbic system tends to go a little bit quicker in the adolescent years, and the cortical system catches up within later adolescence. That is why we have this phenomenon in adolescence or an “increased drive emotionality”. And therefore later on, the more “complex cognitive break” on that emotionally occurs. 3. It can be dangerous and everything that has therefore been executed within the past, can easily leave a powerful impact and, or a bad memory or memories on the individual(s). 4. The most common reasons, or rather; reasoning for the majority of teenage morbidity, is suicide along with motor vehicles accidents.

Hailey- 5. Neurotransmitters- Chemicals that send electrical signals throughout the body. The signals get passed on from nerve to nerve by chemical messengers (neurotransmitters). Dopamine- Functions as a neurotransmitter. The dopamine goes up and influences you to feel great with a charge. How it impacts teenage behaviour and actions- Since dopamine is often seen as the “happy” neurotransmitter, it drives the shaping off of one’s brain and allows them to therefore simply feel happy. 6. The presence of peers largely influences teenage behaviour because often at times teenagers will pressure each other into doing some very reckless, stupid things. For instance, this was like the part in the video where the teenagers were trying to set off fireworks with themselves inside of the boxes, and the one teengager said somehiting like, “having my friends agree to do this with me makes me feel much safer.” 7. I personally think that risk-taking can be beneficial throughout the teenage years because without exploring what goes right and what goes work, and what does work and what doesn’t work, one would have a much harder time distinguishing between the two later on in life. 8. Dopamine is increased which allows for a “happy” neurotransmitter to occur, therefore causing one to ultimately feel self-rewarded and, or as though they accomplished something within the long run. 9. Females- Girls tend to fall into depression and either will eat a lot or not eat anything at all. They also tend to talk about it a lot amongst their friends, and therefore will typically shut their parents out. Males- Boys will often become suicidal after experiencing a really bad breakup. They are 2.5 times more like likely to kill themselves or someone else, rather than girls are after a really bad breakup. They also tend to drink a lot more after an experienced breakup. 10. Friends are so important in the teenage years so that you have someone you can talk to.
