MABUTI, SIENNA ROSE L.
OPTOMETRY - 3A

When I hear the words relationships or social relationships, the first word that comes to my mind is "choice."

I am a firm believer that keeping and nurturing the relationships we have require an active decision from our end. Whenever we form new bonds, we expand our circle and if the person we have formed a bond with matters enough to us, we choose to allow our circle to grow and be at its expanded state in order to continue accommodating that person and ensure that the relationship remains in our lives.

A relationship is nearly always the result of a choice or a blood link. Friends, lovers, and spouses are all people we pick. We decide how much we interact with our biological relatives as adults. Even romantic relationships can be considered transactional because we have chosen to stay in that relationship.

Relationship is a broad term that refers towards how one links not just with oneself but also with the people surrounding them. Two words spring to mind when I hear the terms "relationships" or "social relationships": "opportunity" and "commitment".

From my standpoint, a relationship is an infinite opportunity for us to engage, learn, and relate for a specific reason. In line with this, we must be conscious of exerting commitment with every opportunity we seize. Being committed to a relationship necessitates an essential nature of love, respect, compassion, efforts, and other positivity; this is because the goal of a relationship is to achieve the betterment of that person, it is a risky but worthwhile responsibility. Ultimately, I wanted to highlight the context's conclusion by encouraging everyone to merely exemplify the core of opportunity and commitment in relationships, because this small contribution will have a serious influence not only on ourselves as individuals but also on society; so let's stir up the flame – listen, talk, understand, and express emotions.

A relationship is a connection that binds people together from different backgrounds and profiles.
Connection is a feeling that you are on the same page same team with the person. It is a feeling of closeness or belonging with an individual or a group. Human beings by nature are inherently social. We create a strong connection with people who are concerned about our happiness and well-being. They provide us companionship, emotional support, and more.

There are two c-words that come into my mind when I hear the word relationship or social relationship, these are “connection” and “communication”.

Connection is linked with relationship because relationship is the connection between two or several people who are associated with one another. The connection is the bond that ties multiple people together to further strengthen the relationship. When we want to connect with someone, we seek similarities and understandings of each other on many levels: physical, intellectual, sexual, cultural, spiritual and emotional. I define connection as the energy that occurs between individuals when they feel seen, heard, and respected, and when the relationship provides them with sustenance and strength. Therefore, in social relationships, I believe that the relationship will not be gone as long as the connection stays together.

Additionally, communication is also tied with the word relationship since it is a necessary element to a healthy relationship. In relationships, communication allows you to explain to someone else what you are experiencing and what your needs are. The act of communicating not only helps to meet your needs, but it also helps you to be connected in your relationship.

When forming or creating relationships, people are connecting to one another. A feeling that even though an individual has a different view or standpoint in life with an another individual, relationships may still form due to other similarities or a feeling of wanting to connect with others. It is in our nature to connect with others as it is an indescribable feeling to connect with other people.
"Communication" is an another word that comes into my mind. It is necessary to communicate in order for relationships to form and remain. Relationships that are easily broken are commonly caused by the lack of communication. People tend to talk another person to strengthen their connection and to share their experiences to others. A psychological need to a human being is to share with other people.

Hearing the word/words "Relationships or Social Relationships," communication, bonds and camaraderie are the first words that pop into my mind. The reason for this is that relationships are first established through communication as an individual or group makes an effort to reach or to know someone. Communication that may first have started as a simple trivial greeting may bloom into a wonderful relationship built upon mutual trust and understanding. Communication enables you to know a person better and it helps you to form as well as solidify bonds that later on takes deeper roots into your social life building camaraderie and realizing that this person or group is your comrade or someone you can rely on and call as one of your own.

The first that comes to mind when I hear the words relationships/ social relationships is the word “sacrifice”. We form relationships with the people around us, our family and friends, during our lifetime. In most cases, we must make small and big sacrifices for the individuals we care about in these relationships. For instance, my parents give up some of their time and money for my sister and I because of our familial relationship. These sacrifices, as most parents say, do not hit as heavy as doing something as difficult for a complete stranger. When my closest friends need me most, I try to make time to be there for them. I sacrifice some of my time no matter how cramped my schedule already is, and they are also by my side during my own tough times.

Relationships require a whole lot of give and take. We become more selfless and tend to give up what we value for them, whether it may be our time, our energy or even money. When we look back at the things we did for our loved ones, as well as what they did for us, only then would we realize the dedication we have for one another.

Every other relationship always sprout from a commonality until such time we delve deep into each other, we get engrossed to each other’s connection and consequently built a grid of interconnections not just inclusive of the people between the relationship but across to the many individuals each party is connected to—where we begin to develop such beautiful and intricate alliances with each other.

I also associate relationship and social relationship to “sense of belongingness” for being involve in a relationship whether in platonic, quixotic or romantic means, secures an individual the sense of belonging; of acceptance and inclusivity to be part of a welcoming cluster or by a significant other. And quite frankly, sense of belongingness will always be one of the gratifying rewards of being in relationship that fills our benevolent needs as an emotion-filled individuals.

This is how I distinguish social relationships from the rest of the people. Despite the numerous amount of population, it is only through bonds that makes two people form a relationship. There is a common denominator between people which forms bonds that will transcend a lifetime. No matter where we go, some people would come off as unique to us unlike any other because of the emotions and time we have shared. People would be merely strangers unless we go out of our way to communicate, respect, and enjoy each other’s company. This is why bonds are crucial in establishing social relationships among the crowd.

Lintao, Ericka Shane B.
OD3A

The world "relationships" to me basically translates to "bond." The deeper it is, the better it becomes. We, as humans are beings who built our world with the help of others. Usually, a relationship would start as being strangers, which would progress to acquaintance, and soon, friends and if both parties would agree to take it a step further, they would wind up entering a romantic relationship, in other words, a matrimonial bond.

As humans mature, we have many types of relationships and experience these types of relationships. Starting with the very first one we know of, the parental relationships. This refers to the bond between us and our parents. In this relationship, we learn the basics in life. How to stand, how to crawl, how to eat. How to mind your manners and many things. These are all taught to us by our parents whose goal is to prepare us for life. Until such time we progress to our middle years and we encounter another type of relationship. We would socialize with people who have the same likes and preferences like ours and soon, we become friends with them. At this time, friends are the ones we rely on the most. Be it by playing together, helping each other, and other things that deepen the friendship bond. Now this type of relationship is not limited to one individual as many can be considered as friends. This type is one of the most prominent type of bond that we humans created and it is what keeps our species one. We are able to overcome hardships by seeking the help of another and thus be able to discover many more things.

Until such time, one of these friends of yours seem to differ from the rest, think of it as looking at the individual in a different light than how you look at the others. This is when we humans experience the third type of bond. The one where we experience a different type of love, where you and the other individual treat each other more than your other friends and all you want is what will be best for your partner. This bond, when clearly created could lead to marriage, which would bear fruit when the individuals create a family and the cycle would start once more.

So as you can see. Bonds differ from one another. But all of them help us, as a species to overcome trials and to push through hardships.
Four C's - Connection, Companion, Choice, and Constant.

There are tons of words that could describe a relationship but here are four C’s that strikes me the most connection, companion, choice, and constant.

I believe that relationships always start with a connection, may it be from a common group of friends, family, or interests. Relationship finds a way to bond us even from our diverse background, age, gender, or distance. We tend to find that "click" or that certain similarity that we have with other people which connects us with them. And as we connect, we gain a companion, the people we can be accountable to or the ones who we can call friends. But staying in a relationship is always a choice. It is always our decision if we will continue to build that relationship, our choice to open ourselves and invest our time and efforts. My favorite part of a relationship is we find our constant people, the ones we want to spend our life energy with for the rest of our lives that make our time in this world worth it.

When you understand someone, you may figure out what drives them to do what they do. This understanding allows you to predict what they'll do in a given situation. And once you know what they can accomplish, what they are capable of, and what they aren't capable of, faith develops. No matter what happens, faith permits the two people to rely on each other.

A healthy relationship demands and requires understanding. There will be disagreements every day if you don't have understanding, and your relationship will collapse sooner or later. Love or attraction alone isn't enough to sustain a long-term relationship. That attraction dissipates over time, and the only thing that can keep a relationship healthy is understanding.

Relationships, no matter if it is a romantic, platonic, or family one, is special in every single way. No relationship is the same. There is something different with our relationships with our family, our friends, our peers, our coworkers, etc. We do not treat our peers and our other relationships like how we treat our family. We adjust ourselves to the people we are with. Every relationship is also special because it is a bond that can’t easily be erased.

Whenever I hear the words relationships or social relationships, the words sincerity, consistency, contentment, and faithfulness come to my mind. I believe that having these words in a relationship, whether romantic, familial, or friendly, will lead to a healthy one. As the saying goes, if you want to know someone’s true intention, test it with time as time is the ultimate revealer.

In my perspective, one should first express their sincerity, not just through words but also through actions. We are happier when we do things with sincerity since we are not forced to do something against our will. Sincerity, of course, should be accompanied by consistency. Being sincere solely at the beginning is just a waste of time and effort. We should remain consistent with our goals and try to finish what we have started instead of doing multiple starting points. A sincere and consistent individual would make someone feel at peace and secure, which is where contentment comes in. Being content with what we have prevents us from being disappointed by our own expectations. Once we have the feeling of contentment, comes faithfulness. To be contented does not imply that we should have no expectations, but rather that we should be patient with the blessings that are yet to come. We, as a society, should have faith in one another because we were all created in His image.

That is one thing I realize going into college that respect comes together with honesty, trust, and good communication; I believe that in todays situation we tend to forget to respect each other because we are too indulged with the thought that those who have the "wrong" view of what we think is "right" should instantly be shamed of their decision. We keep om forgetting that we are different individuals and forget the beauty of communication and making relationships with others- that is to expands your knowledge and widen your view of things.

The words that first comes into my mind when I hear the words relationship or social relationship are respect, bond, and trust.

I have always thought that relationships are built and maintained by certain factors, and the words mentioned above are some of the most important ones. First is “respect”, a word which means to give love and let the other person have the space to become who they want, feel how they want and voice out their outlook and most importantly to recognize their viewpoints, thoughts, and emotions. With this factor, it will enable each of you to show that you love one another. Respect in a relationship is equivalent to appreciation. No matter the differences, you accept their imperfections. The second word is bond, which is a strong feeling of friendship, love, or shared beliefs and experiences that lets you unite with other people. No relationships would work if there is no presence of bond. One way to create a bond with another person is to spend quality time with them and get to know them, but also keeping in mind that there should be boundaries set. The last word is trust, the foundation for any kind of relationship. Trust provides reassurance, which will help you and the person you are in a relationship with (friend, family or lover) to keep each other despite of the fights that will come. It will help both of you to overcome any hindrances, because you know you have each other to rely on

FRIOLO, Ariane Nicole G.
OD3A
COSH12

In a relationship, commitment entails keeping your word in both small and big things. Even when it's difficult or when you don't want to. You must take seriously your commitment to be someone's person, to be present and show up in their lives. When people are committed, you became aware of your emotion and the emotions of others. This makes room for change and “growth”, people often feel successful with what they do and they strive towards something much greater. A relationship can grow if the persons involved learn to communicate, look after one another, and most importantly, understand themselves.

This is because emotional competence is considered necessary to sacrifice time, exert considerable self-discipline, and exert significant effort. People who value commitments excel at relationship management, specifically in the realm of interpersonal effectiveness, resolution of conflicts, bonding, trust, teamwork, and collaborative effort.

When I hear the words 'Relationships or Social relationships,' I immediately think of Connection and Understanding. There are several types of relationships that we may build. It might be a friendly relationship or a romantic one. Connection comes naturally when we want to know the person and make a strong bond with them. It is like you are emotionally connected with them and you know that you will get along together. Human beings mostly find connection through similarities and interest but there’s also an instance which we can feel the connection even though we have a lot of differences. It is important to develop a connection since it is one of the foundations in building a relationship.

On the other hand, being understanding is also one of the factors to achieve a harmonious relationship. Since we all have different perspectives and personalities, it is difficult to avoid misunderstandings and disagreement. Understanding someone allows us to embrace not just their positive qualities, but also their imperfections. It is also about learning to empathize with someone else’s situation. Love is not enough to sustain relationships; it requires deep understanding in many aspects.

The word/s that came to my mind when I thought of the words relationship/ social relationship are exchange and connect, which are interrelated to each other when a relationship is talked about.

Relationships start from somewhere. It may be sparked by the simple exchange of smiles and stares, the exchange of "hi" and "hello," or the exchange of stories to share. Then, to continue what has been started, it takes time and effort to have numerous interactions and conversations in order to build the unique bond and connection towards each other until you feel each other’s empathy, love, trust, and sincerity, which shows how genuine the connection is. The connection that will accept you for who you are, the connection that can assure you that they will always be there for you no matter what, the connection that supports you but will also be honest with you and tell you when you are wrong. With that, a social relationship, whether romantic or platonic, starts with an exchange of something and consequently grows with an exchange of something, as a healthy relationship works by both parties being able to give and receive something with no counting or comparing their efforts.

We live busy lives nowadays, attempting to create a balance between work, school, hobbies, self-care, and other obligations. Our social "connections" frequently fall by the wayside. But it's more necessary than you would believe to connect with others. Social connection can help us cope with anxiety and sadness, control our emotions, increase self-esteem and empathy, and even boost our immune systems. We jeopardize our health by ignoring our urge to connect.

We are, in fact, living in a period of complete disconnection. While technology appears to be connecting us more than ever before, the screens that surround us are isolating us from nature, ourselves, and others. We need face-to-face interaction to survive, thus Wi-Fi alone isn't enough to meet our social demands. Technology should enhance, not replace, our ability to interact with others.

Relationship is defined as "a state of being related or connected to a person or a group." When we talk about relationships, it is not just about the cravings for love and happiness that you'll feel when you're in a relationship. A relationship involves commitment and responsibility. A commitment is made to let them know that you want to be connected with your partner or your friends. It is a reminder that you have a responsibility in a relationship. It will serve as the foundation for the relationship that you want to build with them. When you are making a commitment, you must know your responsibilities and obligations that you need to make in order to maintain a healthy and loving relationship with someone. Commitment and responsibility is not just one sided; it is present for both parties in a relationship. An example of a commitment is the oath that a couple recites before getting married; they recite their vows to let each other know their commitment towards each other. It is a promise to assure one another that they will do their best to maintain a healthy relationship and will offer their life to love each other.

That is why, when you're about to enter into a relationship, you must know your responsibility and role in maintaining a healthy relationship with that person. You must be sensitive towards what your partner might feel. For better or worse, you must stay committed to your partner or to your group of friends.

Riza Maria Adela D.

Purposeful- There is a wide range of how deep or shallow, how good or bad relationships are and regardless of where the relationship fit in that range it is purposeful. I am not afraid to lose or gain people in my life- if I lose connection with people I normally get sad but I know that our purpose in each other's life ends and I am happy to keep all the memories/lessons I have with them and use it to better myself in the future. If I build a new relationship I'm excited how it will affect me.

Connection- Just like purpose, connection in relationships vary.

Communication, trust and purpose are the words that come to my mind when I hear the word/words ” Relationships or Social Relationships”. Communication and trust are considered as the fundamental points of relationships which can give a sense of purpose to others.

I believe that good communication is the key factor in forming and maintaining a healthy relationship. It allows us to explain to someone else what our feelings, experiences, opinions and needs are. The act of communicating not only helps to meet our needs, but it also helps us to be connected in our relationship. This will help us to avoid arguments and understand each other. Relationships with lack of communication tend to fail.

While communicating, the trust for each other is starting to build up. Trust is the foundation of relationships among individuals, groups, and other components of a society. It makes our relationships to maintain peaceful and stable social relations that are the basis for collective behavior and productive cooperation. Without trust in others’ actions and decisions, we may have to consider too many contingencies and uncertainties to take action, destroying the foundation of the relationship.

Because of that, relationships will give us a sense of purpose. Supportive relationships help us to thrive in this context by enabling us to embrace and pursue opportunities that enhance positive well-being, broaden and build resources, and foster a sense of purpose and meaning in life.

Communication, Emotions, Understanding, and Empathy

When I hear the words “relationships or social relationships”, some of the words that immediately come to my mind are communication, emotions, understanding, and empathy. From my perspective, good communication is a crucial component of any relationship, whether it is friendship, family, or romantic, because it allows individuals to effectively share their feelings, opinions, and thoughts. I believe that people who possess strong and positive communication skills develop strong and trustworthy ties with their families, lovers, and friends, forming a network of trust and reliance on one another in both good and bad times. Furthermore, no matter how we personally know our loved ones, we cannot read what they are thinking, which is why we must communicate clearly to avoid misunderstandings that might lead to hurt, anger, resentment, or confusion. In relation to this, we all experience a plethora of emotions when we are in a relationship. Emotions are the currency of human connections and they make life meaningful, however, it can be both powerful and complicated. Everyone has moments when they can easily convey their feelings of love and happiness, but there are also instances when a person hides their feelings or can’t find the words to describe them, which eventually causes emotional buildup. In situations like these, we should take the time to absorb and comprehend our emotions, and then learn to communicate assertively and effectively in order to really express our feelings. In addition, understanding is something that the majority of individuals seek in a relationship. To cultivate an understanding relationship with someone, it's important to try to see things from their perspective. Some people find it difficult to comprehend that not everyone perceives the world the same way. If you can just think about things from your own perspective, then you're going to be limited with how much you can relate to someone. The ability to empathize with someone's situation is also key when we want to develop an understanding kind of love. Feeling empathy means to put ourselves into other person's shoes and being able to imagine how that person is experiencing and thinking. With empathy, there is a resonance between people, a bridge of understanding is built between them that strengthens trust and connection.

Thinking about relationships/social relationships made my mind wander to the plant I am taking care of. I was baffled at first why I would associate my plant upon hearing the word "relationships", but as I linger to ponder about it I soon discovered the striking similarities it does to social relationships.
Starting with how I came to take care of my plant, relationships as well start with my choice to have it. Maintaining and nurturing a plant to make grow and bloom is akin to maintaining and strengthening social relationships. We have to assure that we provide the proper amount of water and sunlight to our plants, nourish them with fertilizers, and protect them from insects that infest them. In kindred with social relationships we exert the same effort with our friends and families by keeping constant communication with them, being understanding and loving towards them, and integrating them into our lives.
Another important similarity I can determine between plants and social relationships is the essential role of the sun, rain, and storms they both can experience. For plants, it is an important process to be exposed to the sun, rain, and storms since it is an integral experience for them to undergo with the aim to grow and bloom beautifully. In this setting social relationships also needs to withstand all the challenge, problem, and pain in order to become an everlasting and meaningful relationship.

Social relationships are the extension of ourselves. As we build connections with other people, we form a network with common ground. This sense of belongingness holds us tight and keeps this network linked with each other. When we have a strong connection with others, it makes us happy and confident that we are not alone. We have someone to depend on and they can also depend on you. This is interdependence. When a friend needs support or help, we are there to uplift their spirits or lessen their load. They are always there for us too when it is our time to ask for assistance. That is what social relationships tell us. We cannot solve all the problems we have alone. We need comfort, guidance, and advice to help us in our goals. Life is hard, but with them, it will become easier.

We are taught not just to love ourselves but to be kind to other people. Compassion is a very important component in building and sustaining relationships. Compassionate people know how to love others by being understanding, showing respect, and sympathizing with the people around them. Putting others first is the result of indulging compassion in our hearts. We do things for our loved ones because we do not want them to be hurt or harmed. Hence, social relationships involve service to the people we love. Offering your time and effort is the best way to show how much you care for them. Especially for partners or couples, ‘acts of service’ is one of the best love languages because it shows that a person truly means their love for you.

Social relationships are vital for all of us. It can make or break us. Maintaining relationships may be difficult sometimes due to disagreements, but when both sides truly value your connection or bond, you will not break apart but will only get stronger through time.

PARAS, Juliana Camille D.
OD3A

“Connection” automatically pops in my head when I hear the word relationship. An undeniable feeling that could lead to both good and bad things; good in a sense of comfort, familiarity, and growth, whilst bad in a sense of destruction in ways possible. Connection has a power similar to love, and this, I am confident to say. Being connected with both animate beings and inanimate things brings a certain emotion that varies from person to person. In addition, it is a choice to connect with someone, but not all the time since not all things are controlled by our hands. This is why I believe that connection is bestowed by fate and intentions.

Whenever I hear the words relationship or social relationships, words such as connection, trust, and growth comes to my mind.

When forming relationships, it is important that we get to connect with people as it brings us closer to certain aspects such as emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically. This also allows us to create stronger bonds, healthier communication, and understanding of each other’s similarities and differences with utmost respect. In order to build a strong and good social relationship, it must have trust because I believe that trust is an essential foundation of any relationship whether it is family, friends, and others. When a relationship is rooted from trust as its solid foundation, it provides a sense of security and safe space. By also establishing a strong foundation of trust, it equips the relationship with understanding and accepting one another because we are able to completely open up our vulnerable selves without getting our feelings invalidated. Aside from trust, growth is also an essential component of relationship. The bonds we form with other people should always help us grow individually or as a group. It is not something that holds us back but rather supports us and enables us to withstand the challenges through the test of time and other adversities along the way to form meaningful relationships which is strengthen by shared experiences as well.

People's commitment is their willingness to stick together. Every relationship requires some level of commitment.

The necessary effort of commitment is the key to success in a healthy relationship with someone. A true relationship includes being there for someone. When we fail to put in the effort, things with someone who could have been ideal for us don't work out. Love can be the greatest feeling one can ever feel, if you put in the extra effort for someone who can reciprocate it. When someone who is terrified of commitment notices that their possible partner is developing strong feelings, they will either sabotage the relationship or end it prematurely, even if things are going well. In relationships, the major purpose of commitment is for each person to feel secure and in charge. When you're in a relationship, you feel free to set specific expectations for your partner's behavior. This allows you to anticipate the types of situations that may arise and act accordingly.

Connectedness, Comfort and Growth

The first words that come to my mind in defining Relationships and Social Relationships are connectedness, comfort and growth wherein it is a connectedness between people that is formed by comfort and growth.

Building relationships is being connected to and valued by other people. We make time to get to know them through mutual experiences, acknowledging differences, and trusting each other that we say what we mean, and we mean what we say. All relationships whether to our family, friends and a partner require effort to stay connected hence, we must always seek for common ground, we strive to understand each other, and value communication. With this, the connectedness we have built from other people is formed into comfort and growth.

Having a sense of connectedness becomes a comfort in uncomfortable places. A healthy social relationship is meant to be a comforting place where we are not only getting nourished, but we are also reciprocating the nourishment to them as well. This means that we become each other's support system, we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, and be a source of encouragement to one another. The relationship we have built becomes a close tie and security that we have someone to count on, we can bring out the best of ourselves, and we grow from our learned mistakes and experiences.

Growth widens our horizons for more experiences and favorable circumstances that come in our way. Also, different perspectives of people provide us with the opportunity to grow and learn from them that were primarily built through relationships.

Vulnerability

Vulnerability can only be shared in arms that care, spoken to ears that truly listen, and trusted with loyal hearts that understand— it is a mark of existence. That is why I’ve always interlinked the word “relationship” with “vulnerability” since you cannot foster a relationship with someone without being vulnerable.

Vulnerability invites you to shed your masks and disguises, to surrender to whatever is real for you in the moment. It meets you right where you live, not where you or anyone else wants you to live. It’s the big sigh of relief that arises when you finally know that you don’t have to put on a show to feel seen or accepted. With vulnerability, everything that is essential in keeping a relationship follows, and I think an individual should practice being vulnerable because allowing yourself to care and be fragile means you are in the process of nurturing your relationship with yourself and to anyone collectively.

CALIWAG, Frances Tracey M.
OD3A

Interdependence

Human beings were made to interact with one another. We do not live just not merely for ourselves, but most importantly for others also. If we come to think of it, it would be very difficult to survive just by ourselves alone. I really do believe that we are made to complement one another. Even at the very beginning of our lives, we are very dependent to other people – our parents, our family. Through social relationships, we allow other people to depend on us and vice versa. Interdependence, as defined, is the process by which interacting people influence one another's experiences. People were able to enjoy life the most when he/she have someone to be on his/her side. There will always be a time wherein we want someone to talk to and to listen with our stories or rants. We were all designed to have someone who can genuinely make us happy and feel loved. As we depend on others, it definitely provides support which allows them the strength to support others likewise. One could also be able to focus on their growth with the help of the people surrounding them. It is also important to choose people around you wisely. The people we choose to encounter often will surely influence us in all aspects of life so we should know well who to depend on.
