         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a school teacher tired of the inadequate textbooks from Britain he was given, had decided to create a new textbook to help his students learn. He   had also written the well known Merriam-Webster dictionary that is used today. Webster wanted to improve the way children learn in school by studying grammar and spelling specifically. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Horace Mann</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Horace Mann was a educational reformer and Whig politician dedicated to promoting public education. He served in the Massachusetts state legislature (1827-1837) and U.S. House of Rep. (1848-1853). He was appointed secretary of the board of education in 1837 . At this position he became very involved in the public education system this included holding teachers' conventions, delivering numerous lectures and addresses and observing the schools in person. In 1838, he founded and edited <em>The Common School Journal</em>. In this journal, Mann targeted the public school and its problems. He went to Europe in 1843 to visit schools, especially in Prussia.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This college was founded in 1833 by two Presbyterian ministers : John Jay Shipherd and Pilo Stewart. They named it after Jean Frederick Oberlin, a Alsatian minister they admired. Their goal of this project was to create a religious community and school. The college was listed as a historical national landmark in December of 1965 for admitting African Americans and women. It also was the first coeducation college , having admitted four women in 1837. </div>]]></description>

Most towns had increased in educational interest and many schools where established for those who wanted to improve their education beyond elementary school. Businesses looked for more educated people and schools had started to study more subjects like math, science, agriculture and even navigation. </div>]]></description>
