Common name; Red Maple- it's also called a swamp maple or just a maple tree

Scientific name; Acer Rubrum

Habitat range; These grow best in very sunny places with moist soil, but can grow anywhere. It is native to mainly North America and stretches into Canada- it has spread to other places all over the world but is not as invasive as other species of trees.

Role/Impact; They help the ecosystems by providing shelter, food, and pollen production. Squirrels and birds will nest and make homes in these trees commonly, and it produces pollen early, helping bees and other insects- rabbits and deer also eat the shoots coming off the trees!!

They grow best in moist, well-drained soil, but have good flood tolerance.

Role/Impact; As a producer, these trees put oxygen into the atmosphere. They also provide many types of bird nesting area and homes, while also growing acorns! Animals like squirrels, deer, raccoons, and foxes eat the acorns that grow from these trees!

They are native to North America and are very common to see at night, which is when they usually come out!

Role/Impact; This toad benefits the ecosystem through pest control. They eat worms (like in the picture), slugs, snails, beetles, and flies in gardens and in crop fields! This is called 'ecosystem service', meaning they benefit humans and don't harm the environment either!!

Common name; Spotted lanternfly

Scientific name; Lycorma delicatula

Habitat range; These bugs are plant-hoppers and are native to China! Spotted lantern flies can be found on the trunks of fruit and different trees. This species does best in warmer conditions but can survive in cold temperatures as well, making it easy for the bug to adapt when they are moved to other countries.

Role/Impact; The spotted lanternfly has destroyed lots of trees and vines all over America. They chew the bark and though no ornamental trees have been recorded to die due to them, there has been major damage to them because of the large numbers. The only good that they have provided is the promotion of protecting our trees and coming up with creative solutions to reduce the numbers. Bugs and animals, like the praying mantis and squirrels, have also been found to be eating them!

How can you help to stop the spread?; You can kill eggs and larvae as you see them! This helps to prevent them from being transferred via person, car, or even on a plane!

These bushes grow best in very sunny and warm climates with good soil drainage, making it easy to grow anywhere.

Role/Impact; Butterfly Bushes are highly invasive and quickly reproduce! These bushes take over the different areas where native plant species that are important to the butterfly life cycle grow!! While they give butterflies and other insects nectar and pollen, they also overtake native species!

What you can do to stop the spread?; You can prune these bushes in late winter and early spring! Keeping these plants shorter and not as tall help with containing the spread of them!!

Impact; Housing impacts the environment significantly. When houses are built, they take land away from organisms like snakes and birds. Especially in places like the Poconos, where tons of houses are built as vacation homes, it destroys the land around them that animals like bears and deer have lived on forever. Building a house also emits 80 tons of carbon dioxide. Housing alone makes up 26% of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

CAR EMISSIONS/ POLLUTION

Impact; Cars polluting the atmosphere is a large issue and is a major contributor to global warming. Highway vehicles release 1.5 billion tons of greenhouse gasses annually and 1/5 of all carbon emissions are caused by cars and trucks alone! The carbon dioxide released affects not only the air but causes our oceans to warm up as well. The gas emissions also affect human quality of life and make for a long list of health issues in the future. Bad air quality can cause an increase in cardiovascular health-related issues, cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. Not only humans are affected, many animals can die as well to these harsh air qualities and conditions.
