During prophase I of meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange genetic material, creating new combinations of alleles on the chromosomes.          <description><![CDATA[<div>During mitosis, the cell undergoes a series of stages, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase, the chromatin in the nucleus condenses into visible chromosomes, and the nuclear envelope breaks down. During metaphase, the chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell, and spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of each chromosome. According to Genome.Gov During anaphase, the sister chromatids of each chromosome separate and move to opposite poles of the cell, pulled by the spindle fibers.</div>]]></description>
