Was very reliant on the automobile industry -> attracted many African Americans from the south. The population peaked at 1.8 million in 1950. Due to the mass migration of African Americans there was racial tension in the city which lead to the Race Riots in 1943 which killed 43 and 18000 were arrested and riots in 1967 which killed 43 and arrested 7000. This caused white flight where many middle class white Americans moved to the suburbs as global shift began to occur. This caused the population to decline and less skilled workers left in the city. This drained the city. By 2013 the population dropped to 700000 and was $20billion in debt. Furthermore in 2018 General Motors announced it will be closing three factories in the north which will destroy 14000 jobs (one of these in Detroit)

The Great Migration caused Detroit’s population to increase rapidly. It was said that nearly 1000 African-Americans (mainly from the South) moved to Detroit every month. During this racism and oppression towards black people became worse causing riots all around Detroit and resulting in the 67 rebellion.
After this, large amounts of white flight occurred (which is where white people had moved from Detroit to the suburbs or left Detroit altogether). This left Detroit left in ruins and with high unemployment rates. And has left Detroit bankrupt with $20 billion in debt.
