As well we were able to collaborate better. What this class has done to prepare us is that we have been able to become both self dependent and collaborative in groups. Hence this prepares us for what we should expect once we get to a higher level of education. We have learned to not 
have our teacher hold our hand throughout the year, allowing us to further our knowledge in certain areas without our teacher telling us too. By us doing socratic semenars, we are able to prepare our selves for what we may encounter in a college level classroom settings. Such semenars would be that of Night, where we had to dig deeper and really uncover that of how the character survived.

We all have never had to search for so many elements while reading, but from the first annotations to now; the more we can identify. Without being able to pick up on the motifs, themes, and new literary terms we all would have much more difficulty understanding the text as a whole. When we started reading Night it was a struggle to track all the elements on our own, but it allowed us to collaborate with our peers to get assistance. All of us have become much stronger in our analyses. Our "matters" statements were what we all struggled with the most. None of us got discouraged when we didn't receive the best grade on an assignment. We all took it as something to learn from and to try to improve it the next time. We learned that the matters or "so what" was ultimately the key piece of an essay. It is the argument and why it is significant. If we wouldn't have struggled through finding the best way to go in depth; I don't think we would have made these statements as strong as they are at the end of the year. These statements heavily relied on the creation of our topic/thesis statements. Without a strong topic sentence our matters wouldn't even be significant. On the power essay the "matters" was crucial, because we needed the significance for not only literary elements, but historic evidence as well. ]]> 2016-06-19 23:53:09 UTC https://padlet.com/18eross/di6wzfhg5cpw/wish/114999860 Critical Thinking             Mark Napasa 18mnapasa https://padlet.com/18eross/di6wzfhg5cpw/wish/115011185 Critical thinking is a very important skill that is deeply imbedded in every subject in school. However, it is so much more apparent and vital in English, and this class has taught us so much about what critical thinking is. Critical thinking is the ability to analyze an issue or situation in order to form a judgement, and I don't believe that there was a moment that we weren't doing that in this class. I believe that timed writings were what challenged and honed our critical thinking skills the most. We are given a prompt, and we have to analyze and form opinions on this prompt within minutes to start typing the whole essay. The pressure felt during timed writes is basically an intense trial meant to improve our critical thinking skills. With all the timed writes we did this year, I believe my critical thinking skills would not be nearly as efficient had I not taken this class. Since Mrs. House is one of the tech coordinators at Pacifica, she was able to effectively integrate technology into our classroom in a way that benefitted us largely without confusing us. She was able to provide adequate tech support for any student not as versed in the ways of technology, and introduced us to almost everything technology has to offer. By technology I mean specifically computers and laptops (I had to specify since technology is such a broad thing). The majority of my knowledge about comuters and the internet has honestly come from this class, and I'm glad we had so much technological interaction. Otherwise I wouldn't know how to make my own website, or how to make my laptop more personalized for my needs with different bookmarks etc... This years English class has really taught and helped us acquire attributes for a scholar. One of the habits a scholar needs is goal setting, and we definitely  set many goals this year. The main goals that we set were our quarterly writing goals. At the beginning of each quarter, we needed to write down three writing goals we had and try to achieve them through our quarter essays. This class has also made me more organized and writing everything down. A really important action that we did throughout the year were class discussions/online discussions (schoology Macbeth discussion) and Socratic seminars (To Kill a Mockingbird and Night). These discussions and seminars helped students speak their voice and allowed us take risks and speak our opinions, while also being open to other perspectives. This improved our intellectual risk-taking and see multiple perspectives to become better scholars. Lastly, through the year we took advantage of many resources for different topics, whether it was the internet, books, each other, articles, our teacher, etc. I believe this class has really helped me become a better scholar as well as a better individual. ]]> 2016-06-20 04:27:58 UTC https://padlet.com/18eross/di6wzfhg5cpw/wish/115015818 Inquiry                          Kaitlyn Fujimori 18kfujimori https://padlet.com/18eross/di6wzfhg5cpw/wish/115015850 Being able to ask in depth questions and dig deeper into topics has been a struggle for many students. However, this year in Mrs. House's class we were able to improve in digging deeper and reaching that "so what." In almost everything we have done this year, there has been an in class (Socratic Seminars on Night and more) or an online discussion about it. This has really helped and improved our inquiry skills. By asking so many questions in class, students were able to build off of each other, understand the content in a more in depth level, and improve our critical thinking. In addition, as the year went on, we were less afraid to ask questions and pitch in ideas. Throughout the whole year, we also had scholar cards which helped us think about the teacher's question and possibly ask questions in return.
