Cornelius Vanderbilt, the son of Cornelius and Phoebe Hand Vanderbilt; was an industrialist who had a major impact on the railroads. He was born on May 24th, 1794; in Port Richmond, NY. Cornelius Vanderbilt died in 1877. Although Vanderbilt quit school at the young age of 11, he led a very successful life in his early years. He was very skilled in the field of navigation and ships. Vanderbilt created a very large family for himself with his first cousin, Sophia Johnson. They had 13 children and 11 of them survived to see their adulthood. He may have had a big family, but he was not so good at being a family man as he was a businessman. Vanderbilt was known to eventually cheat on his wife, as well as admitting his children and wife into asylum's on multiple occasions.

Vanderbilt built a good name for himself in the business world at the early age of 16 sailing vessels. At the age of 18 he he began to master shipbuilding and navigating. This is when he began to work on a passenger ferry and build his income dramatically. In 1877 Vanderbilt began to work in the steamship industry with Thomas Gibbons. While Vanderbilt and Gibbons went through a hard time with a lawsuit in Gibbons V.S. Ogden, they still managed to be very successful. In 1826 Thomas Gibbons died, leaving Vanderbilt longing to take over and buy the company. Gibbons son would not allow this, so Vanderbilt forced his son to sell out due to his excessively successful marketing skills. This was the start of Vanderbilt becoming known for his skills in the business world. In the 1830's he began to become the most successful in the steamboat and ferry business, so much so that he was paid to move his business elsewhere. In 1851he expanded his business in perfect timing for the Gold Rush. By 1852 Vanderbilt began to leave the Steamboat industry, to seek something different and for time with his family.
