Running is one of the earliest and crudest competitions known to humanity—no wonder it is one of the earliest events in the Olympic Games. The ancient Greeks included a running event known as Stadion, or Stade, in the Olympics. In fact, the only Olympic event between 776 to 724 BC was Stadion.

What to look for in a running shoe

Running mainly requires one singular piece of equipment outside of one’s own clothing– a pair of running shoes. Running shoes are a necessary item for preventing a litany of injuries. A good running shoe can prevent the strain that happens from the repeated impact of running on a hard surface, reduce stress on the joints, and reduce pain. Knowing what to look for in a pair of running shoes can help save one’s soles.

Whether you are running on asphalt, concrete, or a track, new shoes can make the difference in a workout. The basic running shoe comprises several parts. The “upper” is everything above the sole and consists of layers of fabric and mesh sewn and glued together. When choosing a pair of shoes, make sure the “upper” conforms to the foot for comfort. A part of the upper, precisely the ankle collar, is where the foot enters the shoe and holds the heel in place. Some ankle collars are made thicker, while others have more shape.

Runners need to pay attention to whether the material causes the foot to slip and if the curve back irritates the Achilles tendon. Also in the upper, the saddle comprises the area where the shoes are laced up. Modern running shoes are made with a variety of overlays, eyelets, and lacing systems to secure the shoe close to the foot. Runners want to pay close attention to whether the foot slips in the shoe and whether the saddle allows for the natural curving of the arch while running.

Extending down toward the toes, the toe box is the area extending the eyelets to the end of the shoe, which is often capped with a reinforced bumper that prevents toes from rubbing against the fabric and stubbing one’s toes. This area should allow the person to spread their toes out and flex comfortably without them feeling squished. Furthermore, some shoes are comprised of flex grooves and toe springs that accommodate the foot’s shape and allow the shoe to bend in the same way the foot does.

The toe spring, shaped in a rocker pattern, allows the foot to roll through the stride. The shoe’s two essential parts are the heel counter, a semi-rigid cup that cradles and supports the heel, and the outer sole. When shopping, look for a shoe with a heel counter that allows for comfortable ankle motion. The other significant part is the outer sole or the bottom of the shoe.

The outer sole is typically comprised of rubber and foam cushioning to increase the shoe’s life and maximize flexibility and lift. Experts suggest runners find a shoe that offers traction and durability without being too heavy or stiff. Finally, the midsole is comprised of foam material that sits between the outsole and the upper.

This area of the shoe protects the runner from the impact of running against a hard surface.

Runners should look for material that fits their preference (firm or soft), is comfortable running at all speeds, and is not weighty. Then, heel cushioning is also considered a part of the midsole, and as the name suggests, this part absorbs the shock when the heel strikes the road.

When shopping for running shoes, the runner should pay attention to cushioning, stability, and how it feels against the ground. Another thing that a runner wants to pay attention to is whether the shoe is designed specifically for running. A large amount of sneakers on the market are for style and not performance. One easy way to make sure the trainers are running shoes is to head to a specialty store.

A person should also pay attention to how much running they plan to do. A person who runs excessively might need a shoe that accommodates the extra wear and tear. Alternatively, consider the type of running surface with which the shoes might be used. Some people prefer to run on trails instead of asphalt and concrete, which might impact choosing a shoe with a heel more appropriate for this landscape.
