Review of engVid Video English Lessons (by John Miranda)

NAME OF RESOURCE: engVid Video English Lessons

https://www.engvid.com/english-lessons/

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Over 1,300 Video English Lessons on 14 ESL topics ranging from grammar, pronunciation, speaking, vocabulary and writing to Business English, IELTS and TOEFL. Each lesson contains a video presentation and a test of the student understanding of the lesson.

LEARNER TARGET: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. Each of the 14 ESL topics can be parsed at these three levels to obtain, for example, Grammar lessons for Beginner learners, Vocabulary lessons for Intermediate learners and Writing lessons for Advanced learners.

ADVANTAGES: a) Ease of finding specific lessons under each topic in the learner level selected using a simple checkbox type form; b) Multiple instructors add variety to the lectures which can minimize boredom when having the same instructor; c) Each lesson includes a quiz to test understanding of the material; d) Great refresher for teachers before actually teaching these lessons. lessons.

DISADVANTAGES: a) Lectures are the only lesson format, which can lead to student demotivation; b) little activity variety with the sole activity appearing to be the lesson quizzes.

RECOMMENDATION: Highly recommended due to extensive lectures sorted by topic and learner level, enabling the teacher to easily zero in on exactly the type of lesson he/she wants to teach. However, I would also couple this resource with Breaking News English, which has multiple activities centered around an extensive news article collection. These activities add lots of variety and the news article base adds practical relevance. The challenge would be to select the best Breaking News article/activity combination to pair with a particular topic in engVid.

Name of resource: Breaking News English. Type of activity: Listening and 20 questions. Lovely, lovely, lovely! Absolutely something learners would love, as it is current hot topic of the summer. What kind of learner is it for? It is for Intermediate level learners. What’s good about it? Well, personally I believe into drilling and combining some of the great activities this website provides, which eventually will improve the skills of learners. What’s good about it? I listening to various speed of the text-I would definitely go for it. 20 question game is great one. Which requires to be focused and also relaxed and have fun. In the course of browising through the website one can find differences btw each level and how much text actually changes for each level. How much has it been modified or adapted. Possible disadvantage is if I relay only on it too much and not have plan B prepared. Some students may not be able to respond as quickly I thought they would, so keeping my expectations to balaned level.
