Today's Transportation

During my life time one of the main forms of transportation that I use are my legs, for walking. But on a sunny day I like to go out and bike ride with my friends around the neighborhoods.

On the other hand, when my family and I are going on a road trip or simply just going to the super market, we take the car. This is one of the most common forms of transportation in the world.

On longer trips though, we take a plane and an example of this was when I had to fly out to Cyprus for vacation and visit family. These are some of the modern forms of transportation today.

Transportation a Decade ago

The transportation today did not really differ from 10 years ago, but it did get more advanced. For example the Honda Civic you see above did not even have a screen, but simply an LCD display.

People say that the 2010's changed transportation forever because people started using the internet and with this other apps arise. For example Lyft and Uber were starting to be used and they were becoming more popular by the day. They changed transportation forever because now people who don't know how to drive or don't have a car have an opportunity to get from place to place for cheap prices.

Transportation 20 years ago

While cars and boats are common, planes are the safest way to travel. Planes transport around 6 million people a day around the world! That's around 835 million people a year.

While these monumental amounts of people moving around the globe each year may seem like not that many people, it is a lot more than the amount of people in the 1900's.

After 9/11 happened people were very hesitant on flying and the government also limited flights outside of the country and in the country as well. That is why there are not a lot of people per year flying in the US during these times.

Transportation in 1980's

This is the era where cars started to develop newer technologies. And things started to look more futuristic. The amount of people going from place to place increases and so does the need for more vehicles.

In 1980 alone Ford sold 1.5 million cars! If you combine that with the other brands it sums up to around 10.64 million cars sold! People were getting around faster than ever before.

Another issue was airports and planes. They were being evolved and developed as the latest and greatest. But besides cars, people did not have much money to spend on cars so they resorted on busses and taxis to get around, due to them being cheap and convenient.

Transportation in 1960's

People in the 1960's were starting to experience newer technologies and they were traveling a lot more now due to the other opportunities to experience new ways to get around. Cruise ships are one of these ways. People were scared of cruise ships and hesitant to get on them because of the Titanic incident.

But thankfully their popularity started to increase throughout the 1960's to 70's. A popular example of a cruise ship from this time would be the "Oriana". It was known mainly for its size and its luxurious accommodations.

Transportation in the 1920's

Back in the 1920's cars were gradually growing in popularity but people still used trains and trolleys to get around. But after WWI people were optimistic about the future of getting around.

People were using trains to get around for decades and the train companies developed new programs for vacation travelers and everyday passengers. Trains also had an upgrade themselves because they got new cars with dining rooms and beds for trips on longer distances.

Transportation in the 1880s

People in the late 1800's usually traveled by train, carriage, wagons and bicycles. Trains were the main source of travel at this time, they were used to transport people and cargo. They were popular because of how cheap it was to travel. It was around 2-3 cents per mile and they were often traveling throughout the main states on the east coast of the US.

Ferry boats and other ships were also popular because people can use them to get to other countries, vacation, get to work, or even just to transport cargo to other places around the world.

Bikes were also mainly used by people commuting short distances that did not really require a carriage. They were used by mail boys to get around neighborhoods without issue and they were also really convenient rather than walking.

Transportation in the 1500's

Transportation in these times were still uncomfortable, people traveled by either horse or donkey on rough dirt roads. Back then there was the option to rent a horse or to use your own. Kind of like renting a car today. Because people were traveling by horse, getting around was slow. For example, on average they could travel around 50 to 60 kilometers per day. While today you could travel 3 times that distance in half the time.

Rich people on the other hand liked to get around slowly because it showed that they have the time and that whenever they arrive, that's what time the event starts. Poor people though had to hurry to get around especially if they had a job working for a rich or powerful person.

Transportation BCE

While using horses was seen as ideal, they were not often found everywhere around the world, so people used their legs and feet to get around. But people were smart and they got tired of constantly walking around barefoot. Some smart man found out that they could use the hide of the animals they kill and turn it into usable leather. They found out that they could protect their feet from the harsh ground by wrapping their feet in it. As seen in the image above, the old leather shoe was one of many kinds that people used.

But leather shoes were not the only kind of foot protection that people used in those times. For example people used wooden shoes carved out of logs to protect their feet. These shoes though were very uncomfortable so people would often put grass soft leaves to create a cushion that would make the experience more enjoyable.

First forms of transportation

Humans developed with legs and they were used as the original forms of transportation. In fact humans actually used to walk on all four arms and legs before they adapted to using 2 legs. Humans actually evolved with this feature because it required less energy to walk on two legs rather than all fours.

Early homo sapiens had originally emerged in Africa around 2.5 million years ago and they began to habitually walk on 2 legs. Anthropologists studied these early humans and found that they used alternate between ape- like movements and walking on 2 legs. Humans also migrated from Africa and went to Asia and Europe. They walked on foot since that's the only thing that they knew before they could tame horses and ride them instead.
