Gang Violence

This picture of a person in handcuffs represents the theme of gang violence because gang violence will always turn into someone getting arrested. When Mona was on patrol with Marshall there was a drive-by at Serrano's Taqueria and Mona saw "a blue Honda and a Caprice ... A sound like a baseball bat breaking jarred me, but my eyes never left her figure. Her neck jerked with the impact of the gunfire," This quote shows us an example of gang violence when an innocent girl enjoying her time dancing was just shot because they can.

The picture of the women breaking away from these chains represents the theme of Fighting Back. The moment when Mona starts fighting back is when she is at the Ruiz family party and Frank is out of control trying to fight Mona to get the keys to the car but luckily Mona was able to get in the car and she "Jerked the car in reverse and stomped on the gas, after rocketing back ten yards, [she] slammed on the brakes, jerking to a screeching stop. Frank went flying off the hood." This quote proves that Mona is fighting back now because she didn't let Frank do whatever he wanted and she fought back against him.

This picture shows an array of different drugs that Frank had most likely used at least once in his lifetime. Frank has a problem with drugs, he is constantly doing them, and he has hurt many people around him, especially Mona and their kids. When Mona finds out that Frank had been "shooting up" heroin that is a big breaking point for Mona. She has always disliked and been afraid of people who use heroin because they become a different person, they lose control of themselves, and when Mona finds out Frank has been abusing heroin this entire time they have been together her final string of trust with him breaks.

Frank has abused Mona by hitting her, screaming at her, and nearly killing her and her kids, but for a long while, Mona was too scared to say anything. The first time Frank had hit her it was because of his friends provoking him to do so and Mona thought to herself "Frank betrayed me when he hit me, and that couldn't be taken back. He won't do it again, the voice in my head promised me in reasoning tones, but you can never, ever, trust him again." This quote explains how even though Mona deep down knew this wouldn't be an isolated incident she wanted to believe that it would and she would keep coming back even after Frank had hit her so many times.

The picture above shows the wall the police in the academy have to climb over to be able to become a police officers, this is a similar wall Mona had to climb during her time in the academy. Mona faced many challenges during her time trying to become a police officer in the academy. Even through all of the trying times Mona never gave up. Mona herself knew that it would be extremely difficult for her to become a police officer she says "I know everything will be stacked against me." This shows that even though Mona knew that not many people would be willing to give her a fair chance, she would still keep going and try to reach her dream of becoming a police officer.
