Now it’s your turn to discuss what you like to take pictures of. Now, think about photography in your country. Why do people take photos in your country? What do you like to take photos of? Explain why you like to take these kinds of photos.

Well, people in my country take photos due to diverse reasons.
For instance, when relatives meet all together in some celebration and they want to memorize that event, or take photos of beautiful places, in other countries while you are traveling, either in your home city, etc.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of taking photos of myself, but I really enjoy taking pictures with my friends, and then as time passes to review them and go back in time, go deep in reminiscence, and have nostalgic feelings.

While I may take a selfie from time to time, most of my pictures are of my cat. However, the photos that mean a lot to me are often not of people, but of places and events. For example, in the picture above, I was walking in a park right after a blizzard came through the previous night. I didn't even take a car to this park, instead opting in to walk there by foot. It was a beautiful long day, and since there were no people, I was entirely alone in that park. That moment of complete solitude filled me with energy and made me introspective. I love these kinds of pictures, as they hold the dearest memories of emotions.

Actually, people in Ukraine like to take photos of everithing, depeding on where they live and what they like. Pictures can vary from spactaculas views of Karpathian mountains to gorgeous water of the Black Sea. Personally, I like taking photos of people in action when they are doing something, especially, smiling or laughing. Rairly I can make a picture of a breathtaking nature view, but there are so many cool and high-quality photos of that kind in the internet that you can just google. Nevertheless, it is crucial for me to print out a picture and put it into an album.
Taking photos is great!!!

Personally, I do not usually take a lot of photos. I explain this fact to myself like this: if you're really enjoying your time when you're with your friends or doing something incredible, you do not think about taking a photos at all, preferring to delve in the moment you're in right now. Still, the whole culture of photography is indeed widespread and reverberating in Ukraine. With Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and other social networks, taking pictures turned into a real cult. Indeed, to my mind, people take the photography as the main tool of expressing and promoting themselves within society. Unfortunately, sometimes this pursuit takes very redial forms when real life is substituted with the made-up image people create in the Internet

I think that the reason is to remember moments and in the future have the opportunity to open gallery and say "wow, it was me 2 years ago or it was such a funny situation and here we visited Lviv etc". And also it can be for evidences. Especially in the situation of war in Ukraine nowadays. People should save all these cruel photos for further investigation, not to be verbose.
As for me I'm fascinated on taking photos of my small sister, sea, mountains and dogs. Because I can't keep up with how fast she's growing. Sea and mountains are the place of calm and thinking for me, it's ideal in all it's states. And having dog is still my dream, so you can understand why I have so many photos of them.

Nowadays photography is really popular. I believe there are two main reasons. Firstly, it helps you to capture an emotion, so you can remind yourself about those moments years and decades later. Secondly, it became truly accessible, therefore almost everyone has a smartphone with a camera. According to Statista, 6.648 billion people have and use them.

In Ukraine, photography is popular too. Some people take photos of everything they see: art in a gallery, a cup of coffee in a cafe, graffiti on the walls, a stray animal, or anything they find aesthetic. Sometimes, people do not only take pictures for themselves but to share them on their social media pages too.

As for me, the quantity and the variety of photos I take depend on my mood. There are some days when I find something aesthetic in every detail, and I want to capture it. And there are months when no new photos appear in my gallery. Probably, pictures of my dog, my boyfriend, and me are prevalent. Those are important to me. There are lots of moments I want to keep in my mind forever.

I am happy that photography plays a huge role in my life!

I think most people in Ukraine, and all over the world take pictures due to very similar reasons. First of all, this is a great opportunity to capture a moment, and later when you forget about this moment, you can always run into it in your gallery and feel similar emotions to the one you felt in that moment.
I personally don't take a whole lot of pictures (except for the pictures of food that I eat, that I send to my coach😅), but I do film quite a lot of videos during my workouts, this is a great opportunity to check the technique, and also you can later view the videos again, and, as I said previously, feel the emotions again

And when difficult times come, photos can really help me to stay strong and resolve. With photos you can return back in time and recall old emotion that you were feeling in your trip. Usually, I go hiking and mountaineering, so my trips are hard, but at the end you recive a huge amount of positive emotions, it's unforgettable feeling when they are a few meters left to the top. Whenever I rewatch those photos that were made in the past, they are bringing me back to those day when this photo was taken, even for a second but it is so unexplainable felling, that I can't compare with ane another.
Answering questions from the video: in my opinion, there are no critical connection between country or nationality that is taking a photo, like every one, nowadays, doing it and the style is quite simmilar.

In my country, like in any other country where people have free access to devices that are able "to capture the moment", people take photos for several reasons. First of all, it's a usual practice to take photos on some memorable days like b-days, anniversaries, marriages, graduations and so on. On some days of the year, I suppose, all the kids of Ukraine are a bit annoyed because their moms are asking them to smile) However, some people, especially teens usually do photos to save emotions and memories as well as to share it on their Instagram page. Finally, many people are keen on taking selfies for self-admiration.

I usually take the photos of beautiful views, especially sunsets. I prefer doing this for an abstract, but sincere idea to capture something that is magnificent, natural and eternally and fundamentally beautiful simultaneously. I think it's quite a humanish desire to take the beauty with you which is usually expressed in plucking flowers. Despite this, I'm very glad that sun and nature are not affected by me taking picture as it's only a reflection transformed into some digits that we can recreate on computers.

To me photography is art. Not everyone can take an amazing picture they're first handed a camera and that's perfectly normal. That's exactly the reason why I don't take pictures often, I'm simply not good at taking pictures of people. Someone could be a bad cook, a bad singer or, say, dancer, while I'm a bad photographer. But not knowing how to do something doesn't mean you can't admire the art other people create. I think we strive to make some moments last longer and that's why there are so many people taking pictures. As I said, I'm a bad photographer but I do also take pictures of landscape from time to time. I try to focus on just the landscape because a rock can't tell me that I messed their face or chin or whatever up, lol.

Taking photos has become important for me as I heard the phrase "people photograph what they consider valuable in their lives". That is one hundred percent true for me as try to capture moments in my photo gallery forever. You can always rewind the days where the memories good or bad happened and realise how far you have come since then. As Ed Sheeran sang "we keep this love in the photograph, we made the memories for ourselves".

This statement has also showed its meaning as the war started and photos became as the only way to hold on to the previous peaceful life. We take and pictures of loved ones, the cities where the happiest memories happened.

Photography in different cultures beholds such a variety of history, self expression and meanings. There are significant types of this art however I am going to look into one only here - cultural significance.

Primarily on Ukrainian photographs are depicted traditional holidays (as Ivana Kupala, Christmas Kolyada, Shchedrivki, Zasivalki), also weddings-core (with their programs of The Bride-Steal and contests made for entertainment) and, worthy of mentioning, battles of our ancestors with numerous barbarians (that include Trigger Warning: blood, masses of corpses from each fighting side, as well as parades in honor of the victory).

Apparently, as we can see from the said above, Ukrainians were warriors for their Independence, fun company to be around, as spiritual about holidays.

I'm afraid, I can't really answer the question about all the Ukrainians, as I believe, each of us takes photos of things we value and love, things, that we want to remember.
Fortunately I have some friends and acquaintances, who are into photography, so I can make a little research. There are some people, who enjoy taking aesthetic photos, so they can refresh their instagram, some people make photos of important evens and there's another group of people, who take photos of their life. And so do I !
I take photos of my messy room and beautiful places, photos of the sky and city right under, photos of myself, my cat and people, I love (even if these photos are super cringy, they are still the best !!). Besides, I always take photos of various events and holidays, this is super fun. Sentimentality is perhaps my another name. I love taking pictures, saving them to my hard drive and looking at them later. This hard drive is my little time machine that works every time. I am happy that I have the opportunity to look at myself from the past, to be nostalgic, to remember who I was and how I lived. Fan Fact: If I were asked about the most important tangible thing I own, it would be my hard drive, with thousands of photos and videos stored on it !!
Yaroslava Sahan

In Ukraine, there is a habit and a kind of tradition of taking photos during trips, family holidays, and special events. I guess most Ukrainians have albums with printed photos. Personally, my family has many photo albums. There are photos from the weddings of my grandparents, my parents and other relatives. We also have many photos of me and my cousins when we were kids. It's impossible not to mention photo albums from various trips. My favorite photos are those that were taken every time my parents and I visited the Crimea. Photos are a really great way to keep the moment and save memories for years. Now, the accessibility of taking photos has only increased. Our generation has phones with which we can take thousands of photos, delete bad ones, and retake them. The gallery on my phone is just full of photos. I photograph everything that seems beautiful to me. I am the kind of person who, even though have seen many beautiful sunsets, will still take pictures of them. Every time I visit a museum, park, restaurant or any new place, I know that I want to remember it and look at these photos someday. The same happens when we gather with family or friends. We must take at least one photo! Therefore, to summarize, photography in my country was popular both then and now. It's just that now we have more opportunities for this, and we use them to the fullest!

I reckon Ukrainian culture of taking photos is quite similar to all European and American. But Ukrainians take a lot of pictures with the family, almost in every place they visit. Family photos is a lovely tradition, I guess. Younger people enjoy taking pictures with friends, with food and drinks, capturing every moment of their life.
I am not really keen on that. I think you lose some beauty of the short moments when you think about taking photo instead of just enjoying. However, I really like taking pictures of nature. Ukraine is lucky to have the Carpatians mountains. They are really beautiful no matter of season. Also I heard that Crimean landscapes are breathtaking, but in well-known reasons I have not had the chance to visit this place yet.

Mariia Zhak

I believe that this can be called a kind of tradition because many take a family selfie against the background of various cultural attractions, sights, and views. Photos help to preserve a special moment in our lives, something important for us. They give us an opportunity to keep the happiest moments of our life closer to us and easier to remember.
Personally, I like to take pictures of nature, friends, animals, and various aesthetic places. It is important for me to remember a wonderful moment of the evening, a meeting after a long separation, sunset, or any other thing that will make me feel great.

Have you heard the TikTok sound "Oh my goodness, I love this question!" This is me when someone asks me about taking pictures!

I'm literally obsessed with so much that my friends are joking now that I'm always with a camera. And there are many reasons for that.

Firstly, of course, I want to capture the moment I'm experiencing. And although some people say that this sort of obsession with capturing is not healthy (like recording the whole concert instead of going through it with your eyes) I really do think that this is a part of our culture nowadays. When you're having a bad day you can strive to the gallery app and remind yourself how good your life actually is! Sometimes people in my country take and rewatch photos just to escape to their memories, which is more than ok at our time.

Secondly, I'm the kind of person who sees an "aesthetic" everywhere. Literally. I enjoy observing and noticing. The drawing on the walls (decent), cozy balconies, strange trees, ahhhh!
Following this I strongly believe that taking pictures is not just "taking pictures". It is expressing your vision to the world. So for me, photography is a way of self-expressing.

In my country, Ukraine, people like to take pictures of everything, just like in any other part of the globe. But if being more specific, Ukraine is rich in astonishing landscapes all around the country. In my opinion, it would be a crime not to take a picture of it. Moreover, the atmosphere in all our cities is something completely else, some streets are cozy with small houses and cafes, while others are wide with huge skyscrapers and enormous malls. Those are also popular photo locations in Ukraine. But all of that exists in any other side of the world really. Right now, when there is a full-scale war happening in the center of Europe, there are a lot of war-related exhibitions in Ukraine that are worth taking picture of and spreading it to all the other parts of the globe. That is something you will not find in any other country.
Personally, I love taking pictures of everything around me as well as myself. Every time I go somewhere out I gather a whole ton of pictures taken that day. The streets, people, parks, quiet literally everything. I also have bazillions of selfies both alone and with my friends. For me it is a way of freezing the moment and being able to come back to it at any moment and time through photography.

Arina Kvasolia

Well, answering the first question (why people take photos in Ukraine) I think the answer is the same as for all countries, or at least westernized ones. People take photos of themselves, themselves with their friends, family members, nature, pets etc.
If talking about my photos... I never take photos of myself or any other people at all and I hate when people (Hi mom!) take photos of me, since it will likely be later automatically uploaded to Google Drive or Apple Cloud and stay there forever, and I find it really scary.
So what photos do I do? Not a lot, for the past year I had less than 20 photos total, and I often delete the ones I do not need anymore. The photos are mostly of some birds and cats outside, sunny weather in the park and, my most favorite ones, photos with liminal space aesthetics (or at least I think so)
Liminal space photos basically means photo of what supposed to be a public place but with no people, which makes the photo really weird, yet quite entertaining.

I think people began to take more photos because they realized that war can destroy absolutely everything, the only thing that remains memories for a long term is just a photo. Before the start of the full-scale invasion, I had a whole album with pictures of peaceful Mariupol, and before that, when I was told
: “Why are you taking pictures? What aesthetics do you see in this?" Now I can safely say that each of these photos is of great value to me, because there are happy people, not destroyed houses , and it’s like you are diving again at this time just looking at your old photos.
Written by Sofiia Hromakova

If I were to make a guess, I think most people take photos to preserve memories of something precious - like an event or a place. I`m sure that everyone has pictures of their birthday parties, lots of photos with their friends, etcetera.
I too sometimes take photos, mostly of nature. Unlike my friends, I don`t like taking selfies and I don`t like having pictures of myself taken, either. My favorite photo I`ve taken is from my visit to a botanical garden a few years ago. It`s a picture of a blooming rose. I am not a professional photographer, but I am extremely proud of how it turned out.

I'm not particularly enthusiastic about photography, but when I do take pictures, I focus on capturing the beauty in my surroundings, especially in nature. Sometimes, I'll snap shots of seemingly random things that catch my eye. I don't typically share these photos with others; it's a personal hobby I pursue for my own enjoyment.

Maria Shepeleva

In my opinion photography is quite popular in Ukraine. A lot of my friends and acquaintances are in love with making and sharing enormous amounts of fotos. But as for myself, I'm not really fond of photography. My personal preference is to feel the moment with every fibre of my soul. Althought I acknowledge that memory fades with time and sometimes people require some kind of token to remember events and feelings they have exprerienced.

Bogdan Borachuk

I like taking pictures of everything. Especially when we are hanging around with my friends. We are always doing something funny, and it's better to take a picture or a video so than in the future you can show it to them and laugh together.
Why Ukrainians like taking picture, I dont know. First of all it depends on a person.
Someone likes to take picture of nature, someone likes to take picture of animals.
It all depends on the person.

Examining the initial query, it appears to be rhetorically framed, rendering a comprehensive response unfeasible. However, it seems that in our country, there is a predilection for engaging in photo sessions, both outdoors and within studio settings, for the most part.

On a personal note, I derive great satisfaction from capturing images, utilizing both mobile devices and dedicated cameras, albeit exhibiting a stronger affinity for the act of photographing itself. One might posit that my photographic endeavors serve the purpose of reminiscence, yet the infrequency with which I revisit these visual records contradicts such a notion. More frequently, I engage in the documentation of my visual content for dissemination, sharing photos on platforms like Pinterest and videos on YouTube. This, ostensibly, elucidates the primary motivation behind my photographic pursuits.

Demkova Polina
