The song I chose for this assignment is Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. I would say this song is definitely outside of my culture milieu because the lyrics are a response to the lynchings in the US, and although some Hispanic people were lynched, it does not compare to the number of Black people. As a person of color, I understand the perspective from which the song was written. No one wants to see people with the same background as theirs to be targeted and put through something terrible just because they were born a certain race or ethnicity.
An article states that Bille Holiday broke down crying after singing the lyric "strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees." Billie Holiday said, "I can't stand to sing the same song the same way two nights in succession, let alone two years or ten years. If you can, then it ain't music, it's close-order drill or exercise or yodeling or something, not music." People who listen to this song will most likely feel the same way.
I think it's an important song because it talks about a part of history that many people try to put aside and not talk about. Not only that, but also the things Black people have had to endure for pretty much existing.
