This procedure had just been tested on a rat, Algernon, with amazing effects. Charlie will be the first human test subject. As a way to observe the results Charlie had to write reports by the doctors orders, which contained everything that happened to him. As Charlie's intelligence increases to a genius level,   it's not only discovered the changes of Charlie's viewpoint, but also sees the change evidenced in Charlie's writing ability. This jump in intelligence has bad effects, though. Charlie is now seeing the whole world in a new light (or lack thereof). He also has difficulty making new friendships and establishing new relationships due to a lack of social intelligence that the surgery could neither correct nor anticipate. And, finally, due his genius, Charlie discovers that the  experiment has a "fatal flaw" and has to watch the end for both Algernon and himself, hoping to salvage something for the future from his last days of power, leaves his home in NYC to prevent pain to
