My ambition as a bird would be able to fly high as high can be, like any other bird. This would give me an insight into what all exists in the atmosphere. I would also be able to assess first hand, the life of birds as a community, the advantages and the disadvantages they live with. I would share my experiences with my kin and understand the difficult ways of life. I would attain knowledge of the lives of birds big and small as I would move with them and converse with them while flying high in the air, or sitting on trees with my other colleagues.

Though I would love all this, at the same time I would love to become a pet in a nice family. This family would keep me closed in a cage lest I fly off. Here, in the family, I would learn to be controlled and restricted. It would be no doubt a punishment of sorts to be tied down in a cage but I feel so happy imagining the love and care I would get from each member of the family that would adopt me.

Here, at home, I would be served food on a platter, water in a dish in the right royal style. Aha! what a life that could be for me. Hunting for food and being frightened of bigger birds attacking me would not care for me. I would be a loved one of many – what a wonderful feeling it gives.

            I strongly believe that people are giving us food because of love and care for us. But, my grandpa always argues with me that, they are giving food, not because of love and care, but to find a source to dump their wastage. I strongly disagree with grandpa and quarreled with him on his argument.

Then, the Corona comes. People slowly disappeared from the street, and we rarely received food. Suddenly the lock-down started, and we were starving. Now my Grandpa says: “See I had told you, people are throwing food to us, not because of love and care on us, but to find a source to dump their wastage. If not so, then they would find a way to give food to us even in this pandemic situation. I think, now they might have learned the value of food, cleanliness, and thrift, so they would not waste their food and throws it on the street. So we have to find another source to survive”. Even now I strongly disagree with his argument, because of Aimu, a three-year-old little boy who gives bread and biscuits through the window on the street side of his house all day.

One day, while eating biscuits near Aimu’s window, I heard his parents scolding him because of wasting food by throwing it through the window. Aimu replied by pointing to me that “I was giving food to that cute and lovely puppy that I loved very much”. His father replied, “No! Food is not for wasting, if you throw food to these dirty stray dogs, then they will settle here itself”. I felt ashamed, but Aimu replied, “Pappa, before the lock-down, you had thrown food regularly on the street for these dogs”. “No, I haven’t given food to these dogs, I was throwing waste of our house there, as we had more than enough food at that time, we waste a lot. Now we have limited food, so we are consuming wisely, without wasting it also we learned the importance of cleanliness and hence, we will never waste or throw food on the street” replied his father by slamming the window.

I felt dizzy, and the words of Aimu’s father and my Grandfather kept ringing in my ears. Are these humans so unloving? Will Aimu be like them? I wandered here and there by remembering all these things and lay down somewhere very late.

The next morning, I slowly opened my eyes by seeing a surprising scene that my Aimu is looking at me with great love and care by holding something in his hand. I went near him; it was a piece of biscuit.
