The Unteachables by Gordan Korman

Mrs. Manchester

I notice that the writer of Unteachables switches perspectives a lot: some chapters are narrated by the "unteachable" kids, and some are narrated by their teacher, Mr. Kermit. Based on the way the students describe him, Mr. Kermit seems like he doesn't care at all about teaching and his students. But the writer includes a flashback in Mr. Kermit's first chapter to show that he has a kind heart but is really bitter about something terrible that happened earlier in his career. I think the writer included this flashback so readers would start to root for Mr. Kermit and empathize with his apathetic attitude instead of just hating him.

Christian Baden

I notice that the writer when entering another diary entry he skips a few days and the whole diary is in the span of a few months and right next to each other book. I think he did that so then he would make the story more interesting. If he entered everyday then the book wouldn't be as exciting, it would be bland and short. When the writer put in an entry it is usually an exciting, embarrassing, or awkward thing that happened that day. If he entered everyday it would just be him saying what he had for breakfast, what time he got to school, what he had for lunch. If the writer wrote the story like that the story would be slow and then fast, it would be boring and then exciting. Usually that doesn't mix.

Kaylee Edwards

I noticed the author used lots of dialogue and vivid imagery and metaphors. By doing this they also create lots of suspense for the action scenes, like when Nico, Deadalus and the trio battle the monsters. I think they do this to keep the reader interested and waiting on their seats to see what happens next. There is also lots of plot twists in the Percy Jackson books, for example in the 1st book where we find out Luke was the Lighting Theif and in this book ( I do not want to spoil it so I won't go into great detail, and you also have to read the first couple of books for this to make since.) But when we find out about ¨Quintus´¨ real identity, I had to stop for a second to process everything. I think the author does this so the reader really has to think fast and re-read and make sure they understand everything that is happening.

I noticed that the author of "The Mark of Athena" creates conflict between Greeks and Romans to show their personalities better. For example, Romans are more unforgiving than Greeks, and their mindsets are very different. However, this conflict creates an even better contrast to the end of the story, where both sides become allies. It would not have been as impactful if they had been getting along fine, and then they worked together, so instead the author made the two sides fight at first, and then gradually become less and less suspicious of each other. The author switches the perspective between one Greek, and one Roman person, and I think he did this intentionally, to allow the reader a chance to get to know both sides, and realize that they are both very similar.

I noticed the author of my book is telling some flashbacks to show the dad's past, I think the purpose was to show why the dad acts the way he does now. That dramatic thing that happened led to him not being so happy, and now sometimes, it still hurts him. Then the mood also changes from the beginning of the story. At the beginning not everyone was happy and they were doing poorly. Now, the family is getting more happier, and not so down.
