Focusing on Integrating Multimodal and Multilingual AI-Powered Texting into the Classroom, here are the key takeaways and ideas for applying it effectively:

1. Real-World Communication Practice

• Takeaway: AI-powered texting tools can simulate real-world conversations in various languages. This enables students to practice real-time texting, gaining exposure to conversational language that reflects how people communicate today.

• Application: I could incorporate an AI-powered chatbot that allows students to practice texting with a simulated native speaker. The AI can switch between languages (multilingual) and integrate text, voice, and images (multimodal), helping students to improve their written communication, as well as comprehension across different media.

2. Personalized Language Practice

• Takeaway: AI can personalize the conversations based on each student’s language proficiency, offering tailored feedback and adapting the difficulty level to their needs.

• Application: Students could use these tools to text in different languages (e.g., English, French, Arabic), and the AI would adapt to their level—offering hints or corrections when necessary. For example, the AI could identify common mistakes in grammar or syntax and provide immediate corrective feedback, enhancing personalized learning.

3. Contextualized Language Learning

• Takeaway: AI texting tools can create contextualized, scenario-based learning experiences, where students can use language relevant to real-life situations (e.g., ordering food, asking for directions).

• Application: I could create texting activities where students simulate practical situations. For instance, students might “text” in a restaurant scenario, making reservations, asking for recommendations, and ordering food using AI. The AI’s multilingual and multimodal features could allow them to switch between languages and incorporate images or voice messages, making the interaction more dynamic and realistic.

4. Multimodal Learning

• Takeaway: Combining text with other modes like images, videos, and audio enhances comprehension and retention, particularly for language learners who benefit from multiple types of input.

• Application: Students can use the AI to receive and respond to texts that include images, voice recordings, and even short video clips. For example, they could be asked to identify items in a picture or respond to an audio message in the target language. This helps cater to various learning styles and makes language learning more interactive and engaging.

5. Multilingual Exposure

• Takeaway: AI tools allow for smooth transitions between languages, helping students become comfortable with multilingual environments, which reflects the reality of today’s globalized world.

• Application: I could design tasks where students have to switch between two or more languages in their texting conversations. For instance, the AI might simulate a situation where students need to ask for directions in English and then respond to a follow-up question in French or Arabic, developing their ability to think and respond in multiple languages.

6. Fostering Collaboration and Peer Feedback

• Takeaway: AI-powered texting doesn’t have to be a solo activity. It can facilitate peer collaboration where students engage in AI-mediated texting scenarios and then reflect on their responses together.

• Application: I can create group tasks where students use AI-powered texting for communication and then collaborate with their classmates to discuss how they would respond to a particular scenario. They can reflect on how the AI helped, and provide each other with feedback on how they handled the conversation.

7. Assessing Communication Skills

• Takeaway: AI-powered texting can be a useful tool for formative assessment, providing insights into students’ language abilities through real-time interactions.

• Application: As students text with the AI, I could track their responses and use AI’s feedback data to assess their progress. This could include monitoring vocabulary usage, grammar, response time, and conversational fluency. I could also design assessments where students complete specific texting tasks that mirror real-world communication challenges, with AI offering insights into their strengths and areas for improvement.

Example Activity:

• Scenario: Students practice making a hotel booking in English via AI texting. They text the AI “hotel clerk” to ask about room availability, pricing, and amenities. They might receive voice messages from the clerk or images of the rooms. They switch to another language (e.g., Arabic) when they inquire about local attractions. The AI corrects their mistakes and offers suggestions, making the activity interactive and bilingual.

Conclusion

Integrating multimodal and multilingual AI-powered texting into the classroom offers a highly interactive, personalized, and practical way for students to develop their language skills. By simulating real-world texting experiences, offering multimodal inputs, and exposing students to multilingual contexts, this approach aligns well with modern language teaching, making learning both engaging and effective.

This conference offers numerous inspiring teaching ideas that could transform the way I approach language instruction, particularly through the integration of technology. Here are some standout ideas:

1. Task-Based Mobile Learning

• Inspiration: Mobile devices provide learning opportunities beyond the classroom. The idea of task-based approaches inspires me to create lessons that incorporate real-world tasks students can complete using their phones, such as practicing conversational skills through voice messaging apps or participating in interactive language-learning games.

• Teaching Idea: I could assign students real-life tasks—like taking pictures of street signs in English or recording themselves giving directions—and have them share these in class for discussion, turning everyday moments into learning opportunities.

2. AI-Powered Multimodal Storytelling

• Inspiration: The idea of using AI for storytelling opens up creative, immersive ways to teach language. By generating stories customized to students’ language levels and interests, I can keep learners engaged and promote language acquisition through meaningful context.

• Teaching Idea: I could use AI tools to co-create stories with my students. They can start with a basic idea, and the AI helps build on their input, offering them choices about the direction of the story. This could be an ongoing project where each class adds a chapter to their AI-assisted narrative.

3. Integrating AI-Powered Texting

• Inspiration: AI-powered texting tools can simulate real-life conversations in multiple languages, offering students an opportunity to practice informal, everyday communication. I can also add multimodal components, such as responding to images, videos, or voice clips.

• Teaching Idea: I could set up “texting simulations” where students engage in conversations with AI chatbots in different scenarios—ordering food at a restaurant, making travel plans, or even dealing with customer service problems. The conversations can switch between languages, promoting multilingual fluency.

4. AI as a Language Learning Assistant

• Inspiration: Using AI as a personal assistant for students, providing feedback on grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure during writing or speaking tasks, helps students learn autonomously.

• Teaching Idea: I could encourage students to use AI tools to check their written assignments before submitting them. The AI would point out common mistakes, giving them the chance to correct and improve their work independently, fostering self-reliance and confidence.

5. Transformative Task-Based Learning

• Inspiration: Task-based learning combined with AI tools can provide dynamic, real-world tasks that help students engage meaningfully with the language. This approach inspires me to think beyond traditional tasks, designing ones that are more reflective of real-life situations and challenges.

• Teaching Idea: I could organize a task where students must “plan a virtual trip” to an English-speaking country using AI tools. They would need to research and text AI-based travel agents, book virtual flights and hotels, and navigate different situations (e.g., asking for recommendations). Each step requires them to use English authentically.

6. Cross-Cultural Communication Through Multilingual Texting

• Inspiration: The ability to switch between languages using AI-powered texting tools highlights the importance of cross-cultural communication. This motivates me to teach students how to navigate multilingual environments, a critical skill in today’s globalized world.

• Teaching Idea: I could simulate cross-cultural scenarios where students use AI to communicate across languages. For example, they might need to negotiate a business deal or settle a misunderstanding using both English and their native language, emphasizing the importance of cultural understanding in language use.

7. Incorporating Voice AI for Pronunciation Practice

• Inspiration: The idea of multimodal learning, especially using voice tools, is inspiring because it offers students the chance to improve their listening and speaking skills in an authentic way.

• Teaching Idea: I could use AI-powered voice assistants to help students practice pronunciation. They could record their voices, send them to an AI, and receive instant feedback. This could be incorporated as a daily practice where students focus on improving specific sounds or intonations in English.

8. Student-Created Content with AI

• Inspiration: AI doesn’t just have to be a tool for input; it can be used to generate content from students’ ideas. This inspires me to give students more creative control in the classroom, allowing them to shape the content they learn from.

• Teaching Idea: I could have students create their own language learning games or quizzes using AI. They could design scenarios where the AI acts as both the guide and the player, providing personalized feedback and adapting to each student’s performance.

9. Multimodal Feedback on Assignments

• Inspiration: AI’s ability to provide multimodal feedback (text, voice, or video) gives me ideas for a more dynamic way of responding to student work.

• Teaching Idea: Instead of providing written feedback only, I could start offering feedback using short voice notes or even videos where I explain key points in their assignments. Rather than seeing AI as something that could replace human educators, I now view it as a tool that can greatly enhance teaching and learning processes. AI can streamline tasks, create engaging learning experiences, and help personalize education to better meet student needs. It’s clear that AI can support teachers rather than compete with them, and I’m excited to explore how I can responsibly integrate it into my own teaching to improve both my methods and student outcomes.

My Reflection on the Workshop: Using Technology and AI to Expand Your Teaching

NAME : MARIAM MOHAMED AHMED MOSLEH

Title of Workshop: Using Technology and AI to Expand Your Teaching

Facilitator: Christina Kitson, University of Central Missouri

Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2024

The workshop showed many ways in which AI is changing education along the directions it provides for extending teaching and learning. Dr. Christina Kitson began by underlining that AI was supposed to extend learning for students as individuals, from making learning opportunities personalized to helping provide education for students with several needs. She encouraged the teachers to embrace the AI tools, which saved them time by keeping the students engaged and providing better learning outcomes. She provided an overview of the fundamentals of AI in education. She also showed how AI can enable personalized learning and ease the workload for educators and she offered suggestions on how the adoption of AI can be usefully incorporated into the classroom while preserving academic integrity.

What Was the Session About?

The session provided an overview of how AI can be integrated into educational practices. It covered various AI tools that can aid in classroom management, assessments, and student engagement, along with best practices for using AI responsibly while maintaining academic integrity.

Objectives/Goals of the Session

The session aimed to:

1. Introduce educators to foundational AI concepts in education.

2. Demonstrate how AI can personalize learning and streamline educators’ tasks.

3. Offer strategies for ethical AI usage to promote academic honesty.

Agenda Highlights :

Introduction to AI in Education

Key Explanation of AI tools

Examples to some AI tools

Take away:

AI holds great promise when it comes to responsibly personalizing learning by students. On the contrary, the teacher would still be assisted by Curipod and Eduaide for planning customized activities, whereas Brisk and Diffit could assist with leveling reading materials by various learning needs. This could be of help, in return, for the teacher to break information into smaller and less complex concepts while presenting an accessible and interactive lesson to all learners.

Attachments/Resource Links:

Here are some AI tools mentioned in the workshop:

Curipod: https://curipod.com/

Eduaide: https://www.eduaide.ai/

Brisk: https://www.briskteaching.com/

Diffit: https://app.diffit.me/

Reflection on the Workshop: "Those Who Do, Lead" by Dr. Gabriel Díaz Maggioli

By : MARIAM MOHAMED AHMD MOSLEH

Name of Workshop: Those Who Do, Lead

Facilitator Dr. Gabriel Diaz Maggioli, Institute of Education

DATE: Tuesday, 22 October, 2024

In this presentation, Dr. Gabriel Diaz Maggioli reflected on the profile and contribution that teacher leadership has to create school environments characterized by collaboration, mutual support, and high performance. Dr. Diaz Maggioli cited that the necessary features that a teacher leader should have are: emotional intelligence, accountability, and reflective practice. Educators were urged to lead by helping their colleagues demonstrate shared learning and open communication.

The session provided a comprehensive overview of teacher leadership, examining the various styles and traits that define impactful leaders. With a focus on fostering trust, emotional intelligence, and adaptability, Dr. Díaz Maggioli emphasized the importance of teacher leaders guiding by influence rather than authority.

Workshop objectives:

1-Determine what constitutes the critical components of effective teacher leaders.

2-Discuss different types of teacher leadership and ways in which each might influence or shape school culture.

3-Ask educators to come prepared with a collaborative sense that will help transform teaching and learning.

4-Share reflective practice techniques and peer mentoring as a process by which professional growth can occur.

Classroom Application Plans:

Due to this workshop, I would like to start a Professional Learning Community within my school. That would be a place where my colleagues and peers get the opportunity to share strategies and resources. I would also arrange regular peer coaching on open feedback, sharing problems, and finding solutions collaboratively. I also envision making time in my schedule to include reflective practices once a week, so that myself and my students get an opportunity to reflect on how we have grown and areas whereby we may have to strive more.

Key Learning Outcomes:

Understanding Teacher Leadership: The teacher leader reaches beyond the classroom, influencing and supporting colleagues to create an inclusive school culture.

Classroom Application Plan:

I inspired by the insights shared in this session, I plan to:

Create a Professional Learning Community (PLC) within my school, promoting collaboration and ongoing learning among colleagues.

Initiate peer coaching sessions to encourage constructive feedback and shared problem-solving.

Session Objectives/Goals

The goals of this workshop were to:

1. Identify and define the skills and qualities of effective teacher leaders.

2. Explore different leadership styles and how they influence school culture.

3. Equip educators with practical strategies for implementing reflective practices and peer collaboration to drive collective growth.

Main Takeaways:

A key takeaway from this session is that true leadership is about guiding through influence. Dr. Diaz Maggioli’s insights on restorative justice as a conflict resolution tool emphasized the role of open communication and empathy in resolving issues within the school. This approach to leadership reinforces a culture of mutual respect and accountability.

Additional Resources:

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs): Guides on establishing effective PLCs.

Restorative Justice Practices: Tools and resources for implementing restorative practices in schools.

Leadership requires being open to stepping out of my usual role to meet new challenges, whether that means collaborating with colleagues or innovating in my teaching.

6. Various Leadership Styles: Understanding different leadership styles can help me identify how I lead in the classroom. For example, I can be an instructional leader by sharing teaching strategies or a collaborative leader by fostering teamwork among students.

7. Focus on Equity and Advocacy: It’s essential to promote fairness and ensure all students have access to quality learning. I should advocate for inclusive practices that support everyone’s success.

8. Data-Driven Decisions: Using data to inform my teaching is important. I need to analyze student performance and use that information to improve learning outcomes.

9. Conflict Resolution: I should prioritize building positive relationships in the classroom. When conflicts arise, I can use my skills to mediate and promote respectful communication.

10. Vision and Innovation: Having a clear vision for my classroom helps inspire students to work towards common goals. Encouraging innovation will benefit everyone and align with our classroom mission.

Title: Empowering Language Growth in Multilingual Classrooms: Strategies for Engaging Learning Experiences

Title: Empowering Language Growth in Multilingual Classrooms: Strategies for Engaging Learning Experiences

Facilitator: Stacy E. Brown, Director, Refugees Forward

In an eye-opening session led by Stacy E. Brown, educators gathered to explore practical strategies for creating meaningful learning experiences for multilingual students. Brown's approach emphasized designing classrooms that not only develop language skills but also nurture a deep, interconnected understanding of the world. Her message was clear: effective language learning happens when students feel confident, valued, and encouraged to engage with various perspectives, allowing them to form a more holistic view of their studies and surroundings.

Key Objectives:

1. Encourage Multiple Perspectives: Helping students view problems from different angles promotes critical thinking and fosters connections across subjects, enriching their learning journey.

2. Blend Social-Emotional and Academic Learning: Brown underscored the value of integrating emotional intelligence into lessons. A supportive environment that prioritizes social-emotional growth helps students feel safe and included, making academic challenges more approachable.

3. Prioritize Collaborative Learning: Engaging students in teamwork enhances not only their language abilities but also their social skills, preparing them for successful interpersonal relationships both in and outside the classroom.

Reflection:

The “Empowering Multilingual Learners” session was more than just a workshop, it was a call to action. Brown’s insights on creating inclusive, interdisciplinary classrooms struck a chord. One of the most impactful ideas was fostering a space where students can freely express diverse viewpoints, an approach that enriches both language and personal growth. Implementing interdisciplinary projects, as suggested, not only reinforces students’ linguistic skills but also builds their adaptability, critical thinking, and teamwork abilities. These strategies make the classroom a dynamic, inclusive place that supports both academic and personal development, preparing students to connect and thrive in a complex, multicultural world.

Overall, I left the session feeling empowered and eager to put these ideas into practice. By cultivating a classroom where multilingual learners feel understood and encouraged, we can help them unlock their full potential and engage with their learning on a deeper level.
