They did the funeral for Wueros death. He and his friends decided to get revenge for his brother murder. Martin Luna witnessed a teenager get jumped into a gang, then he was next getting jumped in. He decided to get into the gang to get better help from his homies to get his revenge. When he got home, his mother saw him and decided the best thing to do was to remove him from that town. Martins mom is moving martin to Bluford high school to protect him from all the bad influence and from the gang members that do him no good. Martin refuses to listen to his mom, and rather goes with his homies. 

Characters; 

Martin Luna- 16 years old. Liked to chill with his homies and didn't like his little brother following him around. Martin had an alcoholic dad, caring mother and just one brother. 

Frankie-19 years old. He complained about Martins little brother always tagging along with them because he didn't like kids around him.

 Commentary; The character I have chosen is Martin Luna. Martin Luna is the protagonist and he is a round character. He is the protagonist because is basically the leader, and he is not really following what people tell him. Martin is moving on his own decisions without the consent of others. He is also a round character, as he is changing throughout the story, depending on the decisions that he makes.

Martin Luna ends up going to Bluford high school. He doesn’t like that school and wishes he could go back to his old school. During his first days at the school, martin meets a girl named Vicky, and he falls in love at first sight. Martin meets a big buff athletic guy named Steve and they end up having problems. Martin stood up for a student that was getting bullied by Steve, and they ended up fighting. Martin has another problem as he finds out that Vicky is with Steve and he doesn’t have much of a chance with her. Meanwhile, his mom is trying to get Martin back on the right path, and keep him away from his gangster friends.

Steve; Athletic football player that liked to play jokes and have fun. He would mess with students but wouldn’t get caught, because he knew how to avoid trouble. Steve and Martin didn’t get along at all.

 Life period; My author was born in January 26, 1972 (age 45), I believe that at this time there was a lot of gangs that were starting to form. Which gives me the idea of why most of his books are based on gangs and teenagers struggling in life. That’s why he wrote these books, to express himself of all that was going on.

summary- Frankie’s friendship with Martin is slowly getting worse, as Martin is finally living a change in his life. It all started when he met Vicki. Martin moved to Bluford high with a negative mentality and expected the worst from that school. Martin’s mentality changed when he stood up to Steve for bullying a student. Martin’s braveness caught Vicki’s attention and Vicki’s beauty caught Martins attention. Martin and Vicki would talk often, and Vicki would give Martin good advice to fix his life. Martin slowly started to comprehend that what Vicki was telling him was true, and that revenge for his brother’s death was going to do him no good. Martin’s mom pleaded Martin to stay away from trouble and to make a change in his life, because she didn’t want to lose another son. Frankie’s secret was discovered when Martin overhead Frankie in a conversation. Frankie’s secret was that the bullet that killed Wuero was meant for Frankie’s head and not the head of Martins brother. Now, Martin knew why Frankie was so desperate to get the revenge for Wueros death, because he felt guilt about it. Martin realized that Frankie was leading him to worse trouble and martin did not want to take part in it any longer. Frankie knew that without Martin helping him get revenge, then Frankie would be sent to prison for life. Frankie threatened Martin to stay in the car with him and go to get revenge, but Martin stood up for himself and contradicted what Frankie had to say. A fight began between the two of them, but even though Frankie won the fight, Martin took his own path and let Frankie alone in the revenge plan. Martins change allowed the cops to get information out of him to catch Frankie for the bad that he had done. Frankie was later captured, and within a day, the killers that shot Wuero were arrested too. Martin made a promise to his mom to better his life and become a better person. Martin was also able to find a way into Vicki's heart.

       A character that i found interesting was Frankie, he was willing to do so much extra things in order for him to get what he wanted even though he was hurting others. That is just another level of ignorant and being heartless. “I will not let you walk out on our plan Martin.". "Do you not remember what they did to your brother? We can’t let them get away with it"

·        I found that Martin was pretty interesting too. Being a sixteen year old teenager is not easy. Martin just wanted to feel cool and look like a bad-ass, but it all hit him like a ball to the face on a cold day. He had to make a decision for his own good, but his surroundings made it harder for him to decide. He chose what was right for him but hurt others along the way. ( evidence is the whole book )

 
Themes- The main themes that I saw would fit into my novel are "Crime doesn't pay", which is true because those who killed Wuero had nothing to benefit off his death, they sparked up more problems that led to them being arrested, and they had to spend the rest of their lives in jail. The other theme that I found that would fit was "Good vs Evil" which is also true because on one side he had his mom, teacher and Vicky that gave him good advice. Meanwhile on the other side he had Frankie and the other gang members that influenced him to drink alcohol, fight and to get revenge on the guys that killed Wuero.

Reading level­- The reading level for this book was from 7^th graders up to 9^th graders. The level of the book does and does not surprise me. It surprises me because its only 154 pages long. It is a short book, and It does not have big words. I believe that they set this book at that level because of what it is about, it has to do with violence. Overall, it is a very good book and it the Bluford high series is even better. 

 

Rate the work- The novel was really interesting, I was hoping for the book to have a part two but it didn’t. There wasn’t much of a plot twist in the book, the only thing that I didn’t expect from the novel was that martin was going to stand up to Frankie because Frankie was like twice his size. There was little to no literary device in the book. However, the book was entertaining and intense, I enjoyed reading it. It was a good book, it had a good ending, so yes I would recommend this book to others.
