The water cycle operates at a variety of spatial scales and also at short- and long-term timescales, from global to local. Physical processes control the circulation of water between the stores on land, in the oceans, in the cryosphere, and the atmosphere. Changes to the most important stores of water are a result of both physical and human processes. Water insecurity is becoming a global issue with serious consequences and there is a range of different approaches to managing water supply.

A balanced carbon cycle is important in maintaining planetary health. You will learn about the physical processes that control the movement of carbon, that changes to the most important stores of carbon and carbon fluxes are a result of physical and human processes and that reliance on fossil fuels has caused significant changes to carbon stores and contributed to climate change resulting from anthropogenic carbon emissions. You will learn how the role of feedbacks in and between the two cycles, provide a context for developing an understanding of climate change and how Anthropogenic climate change poses a serious threat to the health of the planet

In year 13 students must create a final thorough research project into an artist or subject matter which has inspired their work throughout the a level. A question is generated which students must answer in their research for example, ‘how does Francis Bacon portray the theme of identity in his work?’. The essay should be around 3,000 words and include an introduction, biography, analysis of work/subject matter and a conclusion of what you found. Students then present this in a creative way that links with the rest of their previous work.

20th century novel study: elements of crime

Brighton Rock is the story of the leader of a backstreet razor gang in 1930s Brighton. The novel deals with murder, fear, pursuit and retribution. Students will explore the book through the lens of crime writing. The novel focuses on transgressions against established order and the specific breaking of national, social, religious and moral laws. The focus in this component is on ‘Elements of Crime’ and students will consider the significance of elements that exist in the text. Students will explore the setting as a backdrop for criminal action and analyse the importance of language, structure, characterisation, imagery, symbolism and narrative voice. They will also analyse the nature of crime and criminal motivation and how the characters are developed. Students will research and explore a range of ideas in relation to 1930s Britain including: British values; religious beliefs; attitudes to sex; expectations of men; Heaven and Hel; violence and danger and class representation.

Pre 20th Century Crime Poetry.
Crabbe, Browning, Wilde

In this unit students study literary heritage texts that feature elements of crime. They explore how the themes in these texts link and how they relate to those studied in the set novels.
Students begin by exploring the narrative poem 'Peter Grimes' and consider how Grimes' villainy is presented, the reaction of society to his crimes and Crabbes moral message as Grimes is punished by the supernatural world. They then explore three Browning poems, 'My Last Duchess', 'Porphyria's Lover', and 'The Laboratory.' Here the representation of the psychology of the criminal is explored and students consider the way Browning's poetic style is used to create dark and sinister dramatic monologues. Finally, students explore Wilde's 'Ballad of Reading Gaol' here they consider who or what is the real criminal; the true victim and how Wilde's use of poetic devices conveys the futility and monotony of the Victorian penal system. Students then consider how the individual poems, the collection as a whole and the range of set texts illuminates elements of crime writing using this to explore a range of examination questions.

Sixth Form students can choose to study Core Maths as one of their enrichment options. They will have one lesson a week of maths throughout year 12 and 13. At the end of the course they will sit two 90 minute exams. Students are allowed to use calculators in both exams.

Some universities have shown their recognition of Core Maths by giving reduced offers for admissions to some of their degree courses. Some universities also accept Core Maths in lieu of a student not achieving a required grade in GCSE maths.

From September we begin our work towards the Unit 8 exam - Responding to a Commission; this entails responding to a brief set by Pearson in December. In preparation, we introduce the unit and do a walk through a mock together to understand the requirements of the exam. There's a rationale, pitch, proposal and treatment to produce and students have to plan a promotional video based on the brief. This unit does incorporate a lot learnt form Year 12 and informs the rest of the work needed for Unit 4 and 10 also.

They will then use Premier Pro to edit their final films for submissions. They work as a team to plan and film but all edit individual films to be graded and end the year with an exciting practical production. They will then evaluate and produce a director's commentary on the final edit which evaluates their production and produce the final Unit 4 - assignment D and the BTEC course is complete!
