He was later adopted by John Allan Hence the name Edgar "Allan" Poe. John Allan was a successful tobacco merchant and had always spoiled Edgar as a child.

Walker, a compositor for Baltimore Sun, had stumbled upon Edgar in the gutter in front of Gunner's hall. Edgar was semi-conscious, but still very loopy from being intoxicated. Joseph then, being very worried about Poe's heath, then sent a letter to Dr. J.E.
