As I turn each page I ask children questions like "do you do that at home with your family?", "who has seen a sheep?", "let's count together the stars on this page" etc .. I find the children are always engaged we have group discussions and they enjoy helping me read the mat time story.

I will often, take a moment to ask about what colours things are, or ask if they can count the number of animals on the page or even ask, questions like "do we think that character is happy/sad?", to make storytime more interactive and get our kids engaged with the reading process.

One thing I can't help thinking about though as I read most of this, particularly the question suggestions is Marte Meo. I have done a lot of Marte Meo training recently and begun embedding it in my practice, it does not involve asking questions like 'what sound does the cow make?' 'Can you say brown cow?' However, it still promotes and prompts vocabulary and growth

We use a variant of the name song listed here, welcome children by name when they arrive. Ask how they are feeling today. We ask about breakfast in the morning and discuss favourite colours/pets/activities depending on the theme for the day. I love chatting with the children about things they notice in the book and particularly love books that already inspire that back and forth.
