We are writing about saving the planet before it is too late to save it

When we waste food we are also wasting the resources that go into creating (land use, water, labour, energy etc) when food waste goes to landfill it produces greenhouse
gasses such as methane which are harmful for environment do you think that knowing about the negative impact that food waste has on the environment would encourage people to save food from the bin?

We are killing the planet by wasting a lot of food, And if we waste food we put gases onto the earth that causes global warming.

Food production is a major driver of wildlife extinction. What we eat contributes around a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for almost 60% of global biodiversity loss.

Farming animals for meat and dairy requires space and huge inputs of water and feed. Today, one of the biggest causes of forest loss is the expansion of agricultural land for animal feed production, such as soy. And producing meat creates vastly more carbon dioxide than plants such as vegetables, grains and legumes. Moving away from a meat-dominated diet towards a more plant-based diet can lower your impact on the environment. Vegetarian and vegan foods are massively on the rise and becoming far more common in restaurants, cafes and supermarkets, so you’ll rarely struggle. Not only that, but cutting down on meat and dairy products can reduce your weekly food bills.and by going to the northern sole its bad

Here is a quiz https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/reduce-food-waste-and-help-environment/

Keeping track of what you’ve got in already means you’re less likely to buy food you don’t need.Keep an eye on use by and best before labels
Remember ‘best before’ is about quality, you can safely use food after this date if it looks and smells okay but ‘use by’ means just that – don’t use the food after this date.Plan your meals. Recipe planning means you buy more efficiently, as you’ve already worked out what you need.

Freeze your food
You can freeze food at any time up to its use by date, then use it within 24 hours after it’s defrosted again. You don’t have to freeze food as soon as you buy it.

Get creative with leftovers
Soups, curries, risottos and stir fries can all benefit from a few extra ingredients. You can find recipes on the Love Food Hate Waste website.

06
Aim for perfect portions
You can use scales or measuring spoons to follow recipes. If you cook too much, freeze the leftovers or eat them for lunch the next day. Most of us have on occasion thrown out food. Two thirds of what we throw away could’ve been used if we’d managed it better. It can be a combination of not paying attention to use by dates, buying too much in the supermarket, or swapping home-cooked meals for takeaways. But when food breaks down at landfill sites, it releases harmful greenhouse gases like methane into the atmosphere. Around 8-10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions relate to food waste. If food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind the US and China. If you do have to throw away food waste, try to recycle it. If you live in an area with a local food waste recycling collection service, you can use this to recycle anything you can’t eat or compost at home. Some local councils will provide a food recycling facility and other areas will have private operators that will collect food waste – check with your local council for details.

Did you know that in Scotland we throw away up to 600,000 tonnes of food per year? This would be enough to fill Murrayfield Stadium 4 times over! Sounds hard to believe right? Well, I bet you didn’t know that half of that food waste could have been actually eaten. Every year, we waste £190 million pounds worth of fresh meat and fish, £90 million worth of bakery products and £75 million on fresh fruit, all which could have been consumed. The average household could actually save £460 per year or a family of four could save £760 just if they did not throw out avoidable food waste. Just think of what you could buy with the extra money. For example, you could buy a new Phone with the £460 pounds or even get a short family break away with the £760. I’m sure that once people start to realize this, then less food will be wasted. Apart from saving money, wasting less food will also be better for the planet. When we waste food, we also waste all the natural resources and energy that go into producing it. In landfill, wasted food lets of gases that are very harmful to the environment. If we did not throw out avoidable food waste in Scotland, it would actually have the same good environmental impact as taking 1-4 cars off the road. The Scottish government has pledged to reduce food waste by 33% by 2025, but we all need to make this change possible by throwing out only unavoidable food waste.

We will be writing about what supermarkets can do to reduce their food waste.

Supermarkets make people buy more food. They do this by doing lots of different things -

They sometimes play music which can change a shoppers mood and makes a person spend longer in a shop so they therefore buy more.

They put the most bought thing like milk or bread to the back of the shop so shoppers have to go through nearly every aisle before they get there.

A lot of shops have bigger trolleys so then you buy more. Some trolleys have nearly tripled in size since the 1970’s!

Even though these are good ideas for supermarkets to make more money, they are not so good for the Earth. People are buying more so more food is getting wasted.

How could supermarkets reduce food waste? Here are some ideas:

Supermarkets could be putting out some free recipe books so that people have more ways they can use their food. Supermarkets may even be making more money by doing this as people will probably be buying extra things to get everything for the recipes. They could even advertise these recipe books by: radio, TV, billboards, etc.

The supermarkets could be taking leftovers or foods with expiry dates that are about to go off to the food banks so no food is wasted and people will pick the food up to eat for them and their families.

Supermarkets could put all items that are going out of date to the end of the aisle and call it a bargain aisle since most shops just have the reduced stuff mixed in with all the other things. No one can help themselves when walking past reduced items so if they are in sight where everyone will walk past then they are most certainly going to sell out and less of the food will be going to the bin as 30% of people are more likely to buy items from the end than the middle of the aisle.

If supermarkets started to do more to reduce food waste it could really make a difference to the Earth. Hopefully everyone takes these things into consideration!

Sunetra Sarker and the problems with food wastage.

HEY PEEPS LETS LEARN about FOOD WASTAGE>

Sunetra is an actress who worries about the wastage of food. As stated she said it's a massive problem that we need to become more aware of. She's a big supporter of the love food hate waste campaign. "It's full of good ideas for how you can make your food last longer by freezing it and blending it!"

She is very health conscious

She is very healthy considering she eats good important food, her children inspired her to be more healthier and her actress job.

If there is more wastage of food it could cause more damage to Earth (global warming.) SO DON’T WASTE FOOD.

If I was a celebrity I would put out more options for food preserving. So there would be less wastage and global warming would be reduced.

A large amount of methane is released into the atmosphere, these gases are hugely more harmful than carbon dioxide in terms of trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Soil contamination is more likely to occur due to the wastage in landfills.

Reducing the methane reduces the carbon footprint. Meaning Earth would be healthier.

To improve the wastage.

Take a shopping list, (It would help for what you want to get when you're in the shop.)

Buy less groceries more frequently.

Cook only what you need.

Store food better.

Understand expiration dates.

Grow your own crops.

Freeze the things that you made for later.

These are all of the things that would help reduce food wastage, eat what you handle and eat whatever you’re having and eat all of it.

(Toxic waste can harm people, animals, and infect the soil. Wherever it goes, even the air stream. Landfills are bad for our health and environment, landfills with the toxic chemicals from our waste. Could end up in our water supply. In addition landfills give off potentially harmful gases and odors that can permeate neighbourhoods, linked to birth defects and other serious health problems.)

So this is why it's important to decrease food wastage and help global warming.

We need more celebrities to help encourage this interaction.

In Scotland food waste costs us £1.1 billion every year. We could save around £460 per year per household and a family of 4 could save around £700. Food waste makes food prices higher which would be worse for people with less money. Food waste pollutes the environment. The UK produces the most food waste in Europe even though it is a small country compared to the other european countries. . 13% of edible food and water is wasted in each household. UK households binned £13.5 worth of edible food in 2015. 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year which is the same weight as 216,666,666 elephants.

You could save money by knowing how to store it properly because then it would last longer and you wouldn’t have to put it in the bin because it’s moldy or gone bad.

Write a shopping list so you know what to buy and don’t buy more than you need.

Eat leftovers so nothing goes to waste and you won’t have to buy any more food.

Try Cheaper brands so you save money and most likely the food will taste just as good.

Check the best before dates so that it doesn’t go out of date the next day.

Feed farm animals food which is not fit for human consumption

Set a budget for shopping so you don’t use any more money than you need to.

Try wombly which is using receipts to score loyalty points

Used bruised or damaged fruits to make smoothies because people don’t buy bruised fruits because they look bad.

Saving the Planet

There are many problems that we are doing to the planet.
Overpopulation: There is lack of access to reproductive health care, putting pressure on human communities. Making food and water shortages, reducing the ability to change in the face of climate change, and making it harder for communities in need to rise out of intergenerational poverty.

Pollution: This is a problem that is irreparable, and damages the natural world and human society. About 40% of deaths worldwide are being caused by water, air and soil pollution.

Fossil Fuels: When fossil fuels are burned they release large amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the air. Greenhouse gases trap heat in our atmosphere, this is one of the causes of global warming. The average global temperature has increased by 1°C. Warming above 1.5°C risks further sea level rising, extreme weather, biodiversity loss and many species could go extinct. As well as food shortages, worse health and poverty for millions of people worldwide.
