Berlin Blockade (1948–49) -

In June 1948, the Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin, responded to the Western Allies' reforms by blocking all land and water routes into West Berlin, which was under Western control. The Soviets cut off road, rail, and canal access to West Berlin, hoping to force the Allies to abandon the city. The blockade aimed to starve the population of West Berlin, forcing the Allies to accept Soviet demands for a unified, communist Germany. The Soviet Union also attempted to create a currency reform in East Germany (including East Berlin), which the Western Allies rejected. The introduction of the Deutsche Mark in West Germany and West Berlin was a direct challenge to Soviet control in the area.
