This girl, named Riley, has had five little “emotions” in her mind since birth, guiding her through feelings of joy, sadness, anger, disgust, and fear. Life seemed steady and predictable, but everything changed when, at age 11, Riley’s family decided to move from their cozy home in Minnesota to the bustling city of San Francisco. The transition wasn’t easy for Riley, and it wouldn’t be for most adults, either, as we all tend to feel discomfort when faced with change. Humans are naturally drawn to comfort, so it’s perfectly normal to experience emotions like excitement, anxiety, fear, and disappointment when stepping outside our comfort zones and into the unknown.

This film emphasizes that all emotions are important and necessary for a healthy, balanced life. We can see that each emotion has its own strengths and weaknesses—there’s no right or wrong among them. Emotions are psychological tools that help us humans adapt and survive in the environment. What we can do is try to keep these emotions in a balanced range, avoiding extremes, and approach them with a sense of calm. Embracing emotions as our friends helps us navigate life. Understanding the role of emotions and learning how to express and manage them appropriately is an essential part of personal growth.

When we experience overwhelming emotions, how can we regain control? First, in my opinion, it’s essential to recognize and acknowledge this emotion—being aware of its presence helps us address it more effectively. Next, try to understand what has triggered this emotion. By identifying the underlying cause, we can then work to adjust or resolve the situation in a constructive way.

Everyone experiences a range of emotions, and finding effective ways to manage them is key to maintaining balance. When you face emotions that feel out of control, what strategies do you use to calm yourself? Can you share your experiences?

Reading about the emotions that appear in Inside Out made me think about this other movie which is also filled with them.

It covers emotions such as feeling burnt out and lonely. The protagonist feels out of place in the society he lives in, which is focused in consumerism and pretending. He decides to leave it all and go to Alaska to live with what nature provides.

It resonates with me a lot since I used to feel out of place when I was younger. I never fitted in and I was definitely never the

"normal" teenager (according to society).

If you haven't seen it, I totally recommend it. Plus, it has a wonderful soundtrack by Eddie Vedder.
