Something that I believe that is extremely important for being a culturally responsive teacher is the use of literature in the classroom. For our younger students we can use books to teach them about different cultures with the use of words and pictures. For our older students we can use literature to teach them about cultures and different ways of living through biographies and memoirs. For all age levels it can make the classroom more inclusive. I also think it's important that literature can be useful for our ELLs as well. It can encourage language growth as well as make the classroom feel more welcoming. Furthermore, it's important to note that while each ELL student is going to be at different reading levels, teachers must still provide them will literature they will understand, but ones that are still on grade level as well. -Mandi M.

One possible topic for my paper would be to discuss not just how to do that but also how to take that knowledge to build content for the whole class based on those cultures, allowing the students to feel more of a sense of belonging, a sense of ownership, and a senses of being the "expert" for the rest of the class to increase confidence.

Some of the ideas I was brainstorming for this research paper were thinking of the benefits of being a culturally responsive teacher and how this does not just help English language learners. When an educator takes on the role of a culturally responsive teacher, the responsibilities needed to do so affect the individual, the students and the entire school community. ELLs will feel accepted and respected at school, which can lead to improved language development and overall school performance. The teacher practices self-awareness, and reflects on and changes any implicit bias they have which makes a more professional and prepared classroom teacher. Finally, culturally responsive teaching can bring the entire school environment, even parents, peers outside of school, and the community together by teaching about diversity and understanding other’s English proficiency levels. Explaining the advantages of a culturally responsive teacher emphasizes the essential attribute of a successful educator, cultural responsiveness.

In my paper, I want to write about how understanding students’ cultural backgrounds helps make teaching more effective. A classroom should be a welcoming and inclusive space where every student feels comfortable being themselves. Since students come from different backgrounds, it’s important for teachers to recognize and celebrate these differences. By allowing students to share things like their traditions, holidays, food, clothing, and beliefs, the classroom becomes more diverse and interesting. This helps students learn new things about each other and appreciate different cultures. When teachers focus on cultural awareness, it makes learning more engaging and creates a stronger sense of community in the classroom.

I believe it’s important to build a safe space so they can feel comfortable building connections with each other or with me. Doing this creates a community where students want to learn and feel motivated. I would like to embrace their culture in the classroom in fun ways. They can do arts and crafts to represent their culture, or bring in a dish to represent their culture. By incorporating their culture and traditions, they will want to engage more and, hopefully, improve their language and academics, feeling comfortable asking for help with their academics or personally.
