Here is an at home activity to practice Phonemic Awareness:

Activity is called “I Spy”

This activity will assist will helping children identify the beginning sounds of words by utilizing items around their home. For example, “I spy something that start with “m” sounds, “mop”.

Sing-Along Whole Group Activity:

Sing rhyming songs aloud in class that students can recite to encourage students to recognize rhyming patterns.

Phoneme Sound Match Activity:

Students will receive a worksheet with 6 images and 6 random letters. Students will then be presented with a word and students will have to match the image with the correct beginning letter of the image.

Classroom Letter Match:

Images will be posted in the classroom and students will receive sticky notes that contain one letter. Students will then have to search the classroom to match the letter to the correct corresponding picture.

Word Search at Home: Home Activity:

Parents can select a letter and ask their child to search their home for items that begin with the letter. For example, “S” sponge, soap, soup, salt etc.

At Home Activity-Vocabulary:

Read Aloud with kids: Reading aloud books with children and having children read independently will allow them to explore and increase their vocabulary.

Roll Dice Activity:

Students will be divided into groups and will be given 1 vocabulary word, 1 rolling dice and a “rolling dice worksheet”. For each number on the dice, students will have to match the number that the dice falls on and match the number to the activity. For example, if a student rolls a 2, the student will have to write the vocabulary word in a sentence.

Word of the Week:

Each week a new vocabulary word will be assigned to the class and each day of the week the class will explore the new vocabulary word. For example, Monday the vocabulary word would be given to the class, on Tuesday the class will learn the definition of the vocabulary word.

Differentiated materials for students with exceptionalities:

I will include visuals for each vocabulary word for students with exceptionalities to allow them to comprehend the a vocabulary words along with a picture. This will allow the students to recognize the vocabulary words by utilizing the visuals

At Home Activity:

Partner Reading: Select a book to read aloud with your child. Read one page and have child reread the same page to promote reading fluency.

Sentence Pyramids:

Students will read one word and then another word will be added to the pyramid that will result in a full sentence.

Read the Room:

Vocabulary words will be posted around the room. Students will receive a worksheet as they will record the words that they read/saw around the room.

Differentiated materials for students with exceptionalities:

I will provide my gifted students with a file folder that contains a story along with velcro pictures that my students can match as they read the story. By providing visual images that match the story, will allow my students to comprehend what is occurring in the story.

I will provide my gifted students with a separate worksheet from the class that will discuss the topic of the 5 W’s. However, the worksheet will consist of pictures that my students will need to cut, sort, and paste to correct box of the 5 W’s.
